The bars going out back is a simple matter of physics (force).
If you flip your truck going 100+, it will most likely still collapse anything that doesn't allow the force to transfer back. That is why they go that way.
That's also why you can't "criss-cross" the bars. The two points of force would be uneven and the cage would twist.

I would think that the rules are there for a reason.......and I sure hope those that are trying to get around it, don't find out the hard way...........All it will take is one death and everyone will think differently.
Why can't we do this ???

NEVER MIND

Here are some quotes from the NHRA rulebook sitting in front of me.
"Roll bar must be adequately supported or cross braced to prevent forward or lateral collapse. Rear braces must be of the same diameter and wall thickness as the roll bar and intersect with the roll bar at a point no more than 5 inches from the top of the bar."
"All required rear braces must be installed at a minimum angle of 30 degrees from verticle and must be welded in."
