Supercharger noises and problem checking
Supercharger noises and problem checking
It has been quite cold and I notice the charger seems to be making a high pitched wizzing/gear sound. I know chargers make noise and it sounds like just that, but this is the first time (I am only a week old owner) that I am hearing this sound.
I know it did it before but seems louder than what I am used to.
Not talking about the whine, talking about off boost rotational noise in relation to the engine speed.
** What lubricates these roots style blowers and is there a way to check wear and tell me other ways to check for potential problems down the line please. **

There is an allen or hex plug in the left front of the supercharger. Make sure the truck is on level ground and pull the plug. The oil should come to the bottom of the whole. If oil is needed it is cheaper at chevy or gm dealerships. Ford has it marked up to high. Its made for the eatons.
Ive seen them seep slightly were the front snout, rotor pack and housing come together. It would take some time to actually make a difference in the level though depending on the severity. I havent personaly seen any that were very bad though. I guess it could have been improperly filled from the get go. Anythings possible, Ive seen stranger.
is the blower ported? a while after i had mind ported it started making noise.the case wound up warping and the roters were rubbing the case.to me it sounded like a bad bearing and could be heard with low engine speed.

After I ported mine, it made this buzzing/whirring noise at idle and low rpm. It sounded exactly like a bad power steering pump on an old ford. You know...... the noise the power steering makes when you keep trying to turn the wheel when it's at the end of it's travel ?
Anyway, it was just the rotors making "slight" contact with the case.....( Right at the top of the case, under the plenum was where I heard the noise with my automotive stethoscope) The noise finally went away after about 100 miles. It self clearanced itself.... gotta love that.
Perhaps your just hearing a little bit of rotor/case contact because of the cold weather ?
Or ? maybe it's something simple like the idler pulley bearings ?

Mine has done the same thing since I had it ported by Apten. It can only be heard at idle and its a very slight noise at that. Once the engine is totally warmed up, the sound goes away, so I havn't been to concerned with it. I've considered removing the blower and just taking a look. But that job was a pain the first time! Mainly the 2 back bolts that hold the SC on. I wish there was an easier way to get them in and out.
