Air ride = performance?

I watched a show this weekend on Spike or Speed (I can't remember) and they took a late model Camaro and made it handle much better (according to the NASCAR drivers that drove it before and after the install). I always assumed this was just for the slam guys. I never thought about air as a performance system. Here is a link to the only L on their site.

Well the link will not stay up. You have to search their customers vehicles to find the only Gen 2 L they have pics of. Project number 12280. Sorry about the link.

Just lowering the ride height will help handling termendously.

The comparison would be air versus non-air at the same ride height and spring rates, not just stock versus air.

I understand that Tim. What I'm wondering is would this system with the four link rear be better on the track than the leaf spring set-up we have now? It should be much easier to tune.

The ones I've seen had to cut up into the bed to make it all fit.

Then where would I carry all my race tires? < grin >

I saw that show, I have always considered air suspension too soft for cornering....but I haven't looked into since like '98 ...is there something different about their kits? It didnt seem like they were getting very detailed about air ride vs. standard lowering.

I have a 2000 l with air ride and it seems to ride handle pretty well. i have never driven another one to compare it to but it definetly handles better than any other truck i have ever driven and its pretty cool that its adjustable too.

Please tell us more. Cost, did you have to modify the bed, is it a four link?

Jerry

Hell, I went and sat in a 05 Vette today and I still have a woody!

The system you are thinking of turns the rear suspension into a 4-link. Pretty cool setup there's a kit for the S-10 that's a 3-link. Both kits are bolt ons.

i think thats the exaxt same set up i have. I dont know about the cost because it was on it when i bought it but i think front and back is around $2k - $2.5K. It has a wide range of lift about 7 0r 8 inches and can change the ride of the truck considerably. Its very sensitive as far as if it is up to high it is real stiff. It actually has to sit pretty low for a good ride and handling. If I were to raise mine up to factory height it would ride way to stiff. I think the truck looks to high at factory, so Im ok with this though.
