6.0 Powerstroke in a Lightning?

The new diesels coming out are making incredible stock numbers (Cummins has 610 lb ft of torque), and I'm wondering if anyone has installed a 6.0 Powerstroke in a Lightning? I've run into some quick diesel trucks on the street, and they make my stock L feel slow, whether from a roll or standing start (I haven't been beaten yet, but some keep up with me really easily, and I'm sure I'll get killed by one soon). I ran into an older F250 with 7.3 Powerstroke on the highway, and from 45 to 100 mph, I only stayed half a truck length in front of it...you could hear that turbo whistle! He had to modded (I hope!)

I'm guessing a Cummins is too tall/long for our L's, but I'm thinking the V8 Powerstroke 6.0 can't be much bigger than our 5.4? I've read some impressive things that have been done with Cummins turbo diesel Ram trucks, like 4x4's running 11's, and 1200 horsepower from sled pulling trucks (I've heard of 10's, but I'm not sure if they are streetable). If they can make 6000+ pound trucks run that quick, I could only imagine what turbo diesels would do in a half ton. It seems that turbo diesels respond very well to mods, appear to be nearly indestructible, and make twice as much torque as horsepower.

I have an 04 GMC Dmax for a service truck at work. I will say this that thing has a loaded utility bed and it still hauls ***.

I personally dont think a diesel would fit just because of the turbo location etc....also wieght might be a factor too. More power to ya if you could tranplant one in. They have come along way in diesel performance.

A guy here in town has an older chevy pickup with a detroit diesel 6V53-TTA with a shot of nitrous it runs 10's if not 9's.

I'm in field service for Detiot Diesel/Mercedez Benz Industrial...I like my little gas jobber L just the way she is

I don't know about your neck of the woods but Gas today was $1.66 for 87 octane, and $1.85 for 93 octane.

Diesel was still well over $2.20/gallon.

do you hate us that much?

best of both worlds... Put a turbo on a lightning.. Oh wait a major tuner is doing that already! Can't wait.

put a turbo off the 60 series egr .variable pitch impeller and i think 41lb of boost.put that on a L and your sure to blow the doors off something or the bottom and top end off.

I work for GM, and I'm currently working on a project to install a Duramax diesel into the GMT-610 full size vans. To me the diesels power is a bit hard to get use to. My truck it pulls hard to 5600 rpms, compared to the diesels 3200 rpm. I can't imagine even running a 12 second 1/4 with these low rpms.

I would like to see a diesel run 10's, I bet that is a smoke show. The fastest diesel run I watched at WFC last year was 12.0.

I have a video of a F350 4 door 4x4 with some Huge Mud tires on it going down the track running low 11's.

Since I purchased a new SD in february, I have been going to a couple of boards on diesels.
A good one is: www.thedieselstop.com
This site is primarily for Fords so it can give you an idea of what a 6.0L can do.
One thing to keep in mind, the diesel motor is going to weigh literally twice as much as the Lightning motor. (About 1000lbs)
So a complete front suspension change would be needed.

I had grandiose plans in my mind about starting with a reg cab SD, shortening the frame so it is a short bed reg cab, and then basically internally modding a diesel of some sort. Put that in a truck with a 4wd drivetrain and a completely beefed up Auto.
If you could get the weight down to around 5000Lbs or so with about 50lbs of boost, and a ton of traction control,
It would be a blast...!
But, the $$$ you would have to spend to do it, would be prohibitive I would think...
All in all, diesels definitely respond to mods!

I was toying with the same idea.
But a little birdy told me modded 6L Power stroke motors
are lifting heads and throwing rods just like our Lightnings

NoSurprise

The dmaxes can make a lot more power than the 6.0 pstrokes. Cummins has some older engines that make a sick amount of power.

Tranny upgrades are a must, though. Even with the bullet proof allison the dmax can put out more than the tranny can handle with only a 90 hp increase. then the tranny will go into a slip mode (no rpms over 2000)

back to the point of the thread, it would only be an L body because you would need an entire new tranny/engine combo and probably suspension for that.

Yeah, I have been hearing something to that effect as well!
I would honestly go with a Cummins if I was looking for pure performance.

Looking for pure Ford, probably go with a 7.3L PSD...

The 6.0L is a great motor, but it has had some growing pains, and hasn't been out long enough to really show it's potential?

i think we have some 6v92 Detroit Diesels at our terminal. its funny, some times those motors will start backwards and every gear but reverse is reverse.

Actually all the diesel's are having problems, if you have a dodge carry around an extra lift pump, chev's are taking out injectors just like the fords (if not worse) amd dodge is also having problems with theirs (injectors).

Stock the 6l is the quickest and also has the highest rpm range.

A 6l runs around 24# boost so build a 5.4 and add 24# of boost should cost less than putting a 6.0l and a tourqshift trans in a L. I'd amagine a 5.4 with 24# of boost should go pretty well.
