Best way to prime new engine?

I'm going to be reinstalling my 9000 mile stock engine in the next few weeks. Whats the best way to prime the oil pump and get pressure up before i first fire it. On my built motor I disconnected the fuel pump connector at the saftey switch and cranked it for 30 seconds at a time did that 10 times then reconnected the pump, it fired up but made lifter racket for good 15 seconds
. I was thinking of putting a mechnical guage off the port on the corner of the head and crank it till i see pressure. How does the big 3 JDM,PSP,JL do it? Reason i'm going back to stock is the SHM engine sounds like a powerstroke at idle oil is leaking into coolant only 800 miles on it. Thanks for your help.

At murrays or maybe autozone you can borrow a primer kit. You fill the tank with oil, pressurize it, screw the hose/fitting into a port, and turn the valve. It's very very easy to do.

pull the spark plugs, disable the fuel pump and crank it over, this is ford's recommended technique.

or like you mentioned, you may be able to locate an auxiliary primer pump to force oil into the motor prior to starting.

good luck.

later,

Make sure you fill the oil filter by hand then install filter. That way youll have insatnt pressure instead of waiting for it to fill.I also believe theres some kind of grease to put in the pump to prime it.Youll have to look into that, not exactly sure of the method.

That very well may be an "industry standard" way of priming the system. However none of my motors will be spun over til it's had oil flowing.

With plugs and fuel off crank it till i get pressure up to the head, if i hook a mech. press. guage to a corner port. How long should i crank what intervals ,crank for 20 seconds then let set a 1 min then crank 20 seconds again, set a min. till i start getting presure? Thanks for all your help

When I change the oil, I'll fill the oil filter. As I start the L, I'll hold the gas pedal to the floor. This allows the motor to crank over but not start. I'll do that for about 7 seconds. After that, I'll start it up like normal.

If you really want to be on the "safe" side - there's no substitute for "pressurizing" your dry engine with oil before turning it over. As Rich noted, I'd look into getting one of the primer pressure system's available. An old way of doing this, after the engine has been assembled and prior to startup, where the oil pump ran off the distrbutor, we'd hook up a shaft up to replace the distributor shaft and usually connect a flexible drive connected to a 1/2 drill motor - and spin the pump up until the oil pressure gauge would read about 60 lbs, and with the valve covers off, we could see oil coming up through some of the pushrods - and at that point we felt that there was sufficient lubrication on the bearing surfaces. Then we'd pop the valve covers on and install the distributor and fire it up. Before all this, we'd put some moly lube on the camshaft lobes abd lifter surfaces.

Unfortunatly there is no good way to prime a Mod engine. The oil pump is drivin of the crank shaft! If you really want the only way to prime your new engine you will need an Oil accumulator that can be pressurized and released through the engine before start up. This is the only way you can be assured of a true oil prime.
My bult long block has had one since day one!
