Well it happened
WOW this is a bad month, at least 3 or 4 I've read already,
so so sorry Mike
As said this happens every got dam winter, scares the schitt out of all of us, sorry it was you
So much changes in the Cold Weather, Computer adds Timing, Cold Air adds Boost, and sometimes motor goes boom, you just never know when it's your time, (as much as we all know these frigging beast really are time bombs waiting to explode)
Many stock L's blow up too, IMO it's just wrong that under these circumstances we dont have SOMETHING that constantly SELF adjust's itself to changing conditions, (temp's, octane, elevations, etc.... )
I hope something good comes from this, let us know how we can help

133mph is still in 3rd gear? On my truck, I believe I'd be in OD.
16psi + 8.4:1 CR + 93 octane = on the edge, no matter the A/F ratio or timing.
You can run the A/F ratio as rich as you want, but at some point where you cross the threshold of maximum static compression for a given octane of the fuel you're using... its going to go boom.
Then given the fact that on these type of top-speed runs your engine is under a LOT more load (super high cylinder pressure over a long period of time... after all rate of engine acceleration is much less at high speed in higher gears than it is in lower gears), and its a recipe for disaster.
I'm not saying no one blows a stock motor when it gets cold. I just think there were more factors in play than people may be considering.

Sorry Rob, I have to disagree with you. These trucks can easily handle temperature changes or what YOU GUYS call cold weather. When you push the limits, you really narrow your security margin. I guess the Ford tuners are really pretty damn good after all...
You have to use the stock program in extreme temperatures. Despite the impression you may have reading these boards, the Lightnings are very reliable vehicles. Everything coming out of Ford factories has to meet long term reliability standards and must be able to operate in all weather conditions from the North Pole to the Equator.
Personally, My Lightning has seen as low as -48 towing a trailer and gear with 2 snow machines without any issues whatsoever.
The coldest I have ever seen was when we had problems with antifreeze freezing in our snow machine, even though it was diluted at 70/30 mixture. That was F^%$#^% cold. At that temperature, your ***** become internal organs...
Temperature
(-40°F)
Wind Speed in Miles per Hour (mph)
0......5....10....15....20...25....30....35.....40 ...45
-40 -47 -71 -85 -95 -103 -109 -113 -115 -117
EDIT - closed the quote to make it easier to read- Doug

no
we are talking about modded trucks with additional boost.....timming........ect.
Like you said......you have to use the stock tune.......which you can't do when your modded.
I'm sure you weren't going 133mph towing trailors in -40 degree weather either.
Additional boost......timming........in cold weather will cause these engines to blow......period. It's been proven.....so why debate it.

When you get a "tune" you really ought to go with someone who knows what they are doing and tell them exactly how your gonna run it.
I told Paul at REM that I was going to shoot for my best ETs on a 30 degree day. He tuned it accordingly and it flat works.
Rich
truck was tuned for cold weather and warm weather (flip chip)
my a/f was just fine last i had it on the dyno
my mods
ported upper
ported blower
accufab s/b tb
JDM stage 1
e-fan
5 lb lower
i know i screwed up in running like that on a cool day, but i wasnt really thinking about it
and i always run on my cold side of the chip unless i am at hte truck so i didnt push it in that fashion
and yeah Don i already talked to Anthony and they got a used short block there, thanks for the idea tho
well see what happens in the future
just lettin eveybody know what happen and to be careful out there in this cold weather
