EMERGENCY HELP!!! Brake experts?

Ok, getting ready to drive my truck to Virginia, from Boston.

I blew a brake pad or something causing the rotor to grind on the front driverside. I called pep boys, they say the rotor comes with the hub and it is 400 dollars. Is that true? Is there another way?

HELP ASAP!!!!!!!

The disc and hub are an integral assembly, but they should not even be close to $400. Did you try the dealer, Auto Zone or NAPA? You can buy a complete set of slotted rotors on eBay for under $200.00, so $400 for just one is a ripoff.

The rotor and hub are one piece but $400.00 is BS. Stan sells a set of slotted fronts for $290.00 (and that's for two rotors). You can buy cheaper one's than Stan's.

You can turn the rotor unless it really torn up bad.

New Wagner rotors complete with new bearing races for $68 at O'Reilly AutoParts . They had the Lightning listd as NASCAR truck, go figure. especially since NASCAR trucks used standard "small" F150 rotors.

Not to sound dumb. For those that replaced the front rotors, did you have to buy or re-use your old bearings? I havent taken one off on the L yet so I dont know exactly how its looks.

I dont think bearing cost that much, im guessing 10-20 bucks, since u already taking it off, why not just replace them. if ur old bearings are in good conditions, then u can probably just re-use them.

Never use the old bearing in a new hub. The new hub will have new races in it but you should knock those out and use the ones with the bearing set.

I would look at Autozone or advance auto parts for a better price. One hud should be under a hundred bucks.

Don, thanks for updating the post!
Yes, Pep Boys wanted 4 bills for ONE rotor. I didn't check it out, maybe it came with a blow job or something, I don't know? Anyway, I got ahold of a NAPA rotor. It was the wrong rotor. I went to return it, and the guy got pi$$ed, saying I must have a nascar truck. I told him I was pretty sure my truck was a Lightning. He took it back and literally threw my credit card at me. Fine, no problem.

Soooo, I call JDM and explain whats going on. JimIII gets right on it. Does all the leg work, and gets my parts. I drove to JDM's (Hey, had to literally go right by there on the way to VA) and wait for my parts, while watching Jim and Shawn work magic on 8URSS's truck. Once my parts came in Craig of JDM dropped what he was doing, and did a complete front brake job on my truck and charged me next to nothing for labor. I then jumped back on the highway with my truck stopping like new, and b-lined for VA just in time to meet the ship I'm assigned to!

OK, sorry for the long post, I just want to thank the crew at JDM for going WAYYYYYYYYY above and beyond for me! Just like David Ortiz in the Red Sox playoffs, I asked them to go to bat for me and they hit a game winning walk off home run!!!!!!!! TEAM JDM ROCKS!!!!!

did your brakes just wear out or was it a sticking caliper up front ? i know for a fact that most of the time the reason why calipers stick is due to the fact that no one ever changes the brake fluid. brake fluid breaks down from heat (over boils) and collects lots and lots of moisture. thats what gives it the "coffee" look. i change my break fluid once a year on both my 2004 and 1994 lightning.....yep ive had my 04 for over a year now and only have 4k on it......lol but anyway, some people just ignore brake fluid when its as important as an oil change if not more important due to the fact that its gotta stop 2.5 tons of steel.
