Road Racing Maintenance

Well, missed running at VIR last weekend because
of a horrible shake in the front end. Got under there
last night to find about 1 1/2 inches of play in my idler
arm and an outer ball joint left side that is pretty loose.
In addition, the main ball joints on the UCA's are shot and
the replacements aren't here yet.

There is 52,000 miles on "Christine" and they haven't been
all "moseying" miles. Some excursions into the rough and
an attempt to FLY. So I guess maybe 2-5 thousand track
miles?

So is this pretty normal "wear and tear" replacements?

I know Stan goes through everything after/before every race,
and I give everything a pretty good visual. Is there any
other "points of failure" that I might be overlooking?

I am gonna start developing a "list" that I will share when it's done. For example:

Check front bearings
Check all brake linings
Check brake rotors for cracking
Change Fuel Filter
Change to stock pulley for Road Racing < grin >
Change to Sal's Road Race Tune
etc.

TIA

Cliff

PS... Found a GREAT place for stock parts ... www.rockauto.com

Nobody races anywhere with floormats, do they? Even the
dragstrips should require their removal ... Good point though.

Those are great ones ... Most tech sheets cover those ...
about the strangest tech requirement I have seen is the
"remove tonneau cover" (Which I always ignore cause the
stocker is pretty bomber in attahment) and the "leather
topped shoes" one ... My New Balance's just aren't good enough
to pass the Porsche guys tech ... < LOL >

I guess it's so you don't melt your shoes to your feet if you wreck.

One other surprise ... My Limited Slip is totally gone ... Grrrr ... too
many burnouts?

I was told TRW makes some good quality replacement ball joints.

If you have been doing any serious stopping and getting fade then I would bleed the brakes and repack the wheel bearings.I have literally melted the grease out of the bearing.sTan

All fluid levels. Make up a regular replace schedule that suits your usage. I.E. change rear diff every other track day, change tranny fluid after 3 events, change engine oil and brake fluid every event. Create an Exel spread sheet with your check list. It will make for a quick and complete check before you hit the track. Also good to have a post race inspection sheet especially if you do not trailer your truck home. Nothing like hitting the freeway after a day at the track only to discover your brake pads are gone.

Been there, Done That ... < grin > Stopping is such SWEET pleasure !!!

The local "L" owners accuse me of performing "Brembo Checks"
everytime we drive somewhere together. They are usually
behind me and see the brake lights flash, then instant deceleration.

LOL
