trans problem

For the last week or so when driving at about 35 and if you give it a bit of gas you can hear the motor spin but the rpm's don't increase. This has been constant for the last week. Now tonight the truck wouldn't shift out of first. Take off from a dead stop and the RPM's would just keep climbing. When you let off it would then shift into gear after a few seconds. It's stock trans and only other mods are 4lb lower and PSP chip. Any idea what the problem may be?

I'm sure that Gregg Evens is more quailfied to answer this then me, But let me go out on a limb and guess that your tranny is toast!! It sounds like you clutch packs are shedded and they can no longer handle any power.
It may have something to do with the converter but I doubt it. Have you checked the fluid level? What color is it? Does it smell burnt? I'd drop the pan and check the fluid for debreis ( peices of metel or clutch material )
If it makes you feel any better I just forked out $2,900 for a new fully built tranny and converter since mine started to slip BAD durning the 1-2 shift. I did not go with a Monster Box simply because I had no room on my card for the core charge!! It sucks but I'm hoping this will hold up for good long while. If not I'll be begging Gregg for some help.

Sounds like an intermediate clutch problem, is it a 2001 by chance? If it is, is it a 1J or a 5X, (the ID code on the tag on the drivers side just forward of the extension housing).

It is a 2001. I just checked and it is a 5X. What's with the 5X and 1J code transmissions?

Thanks

The 5X is the better or more desireable of the 2. The are also some problems with the 1J trans. The 1J can be upgraded to 5X specs with some simple part upgrades.

I drove the truck to work this morning which is about 6 miles. About 3/4 of the way there it started shifting very very hard. Then the OD light started flashing. When I got out of work 3hrs later the light was not flashing and you couldn't feel it shift at all. Same thing on the way home about 3/4 of the way there it started shifting very hard again. Same problem as before still where it doesnt want to shift out of first. I am calling shortly to find out where it needs to be taken since it has an extended warranty.

Get a dealer to read the codes that threw the light and I'll be able to tell you a lot more.

Here's the current situation. . Can anyone tell me if they can do this. Extended warranty OK'd the trans to be replaced. It has 12k miles on it. I have had it since 7700 miles. Since the new Ford trans comes with a warranty the extended warranty no longer covers that area. Now due to the mods which were put on by the previous owner the ford dealer says it will not put a warranty on the new transmission. This means if it goes out I am stuck buying a new one. Can they refuse to put a warranty on it just because of the pulley and chip? I thought they needed proof that a specific modification caused the failure in order to deny a warranty. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I don't know for sure, but I think they have a lot more leeway with a replacement part. The things I am legally entitled to do with a Monster Box (but I give up these rights by my published warranty) is pretty much however I want to cover it, as long as I tell you upfront, I can do anything I want. Since they are telling you up front, I'd guess they can do this.
