Question Need help removing pinion angle shim, please

Hi guys,

I'm not quite sure how to remove or reverse my spring pack shim. I see that the U-bolts appear to have 20mm nuts....how about the bolt that goes through the leafs and the axle?

Any advice on how to do this please? Important steps etc.

I installed JLP 4" shackles and this creates a vibration at 20 mph.

Thank you!!

Oh boy lets see if I can remember how I did it. If you flip it , it will be real easy. You need to put a pair of vise grips under the spring onto the round head on the bolt that goes through the middle of the leafs and shim. Just losen the nut on the top a swing the shim 180* and tighten back up.
If you remove the shim you will need to take the nut off completly and lower the axle to able to get the bolt out since its between the axle tube and leafs. Once yo get some room between the leafs and axle housing you will still need to push up on the spring to get the clearance to remove the bolt.

I might of done it the hard way? But at least I posted someting for that I know works.

Make sure you use some C-clamps to hold the leafs together or you might end up with mess trying to get them to line up even again with those thin steel shims that sit between the leafs..you'll see.

Thanks Bird!

I'm going to just reverse it then. Do you happen to remember the size of the nut on the bolt that goes through the leafs? Also, do I need to lower the axle to get to that round head to get the vise grips on it?

Thank you so much for the help!

Clamps the springs, Remove the U bolts and plates, Push up on the leafs and install the vise grips on the rounds bolt, Loosen the nut, spin the shim. tighten the nut. Do the reverse to reinstall everthing.
I'm not sure of the nut size? Just try a couple untill it fits.

Thanks to Bird that was easy! Smooth as glass now.

So if anybody needs to know, with JLP 4" shackles you can just flip the shim to get rid of vibration. Also the nut on the bolt that goes through the leafs is a 15mm and the U-bolt nuts are 21mm.

Sounds good, but what year do you have? Do you have a '03/'04 with the huge rake or the older model L?

Also, gotta show us some pics now

Now you need to get an alignment, as per Mr. Skelton advised me. That's why I just had the alignment shop do the flip also.

Okay don't hold me to this but the rear needs to be checked that it is square, in addition if I am not mistaken the castor for the front is now changed because the back is now lower.

I took Tim's advice and a alignment guy I know found that my alingment was out partly due to the rear lower and from the factory becuase the toe was bad. With the alignment he did I now have 23k on my oringinal F1's and I am not into the wear bars. Yes I do roast them occaisonally, just not every day. I would say it was the best $60 I spent.
