Screeeecch!!!

Ok heres the problem. First off i have an 01 L with 60k miles. In the mournings now that its getting cold my engine makes a horrible screeching sound. The thing is that after the engine heats up (after driving for about 5-10 minuets) it will go away. The sound seems to be coming from the front of the engine so i was thinking maybe one of the bearings on one of the pulleys is bad. My auto shop teacher suggested it might be loose belts but my belts arent loose. I figure this must be a common problem because i notice some other cars making this noise in the mourning. Any ideas or suggestions guys would be great.

Thanks, Jack

Are you still running the stock accessory belt or supercharger belt? If so, you may want to go to gatorback belts for both. I took the stock belt off of my blower, and put on a gatorback. 2 months later the stock belt still has the same shape memory in it as it had when I took it off. It is a VERY hard compound rubber, and I wouldn't be suprised if they start slipping in the cold after they get some miles on them. While the belts are off, turn all your pullies and accessories to see if a bearing is bad. Oh and welcome aboard

What you are describing is the belt slipping on the altenator. After you start it the load on the alternator goes way up for a few minutes while it charges at max output to restore the power you used in starting. Change the belt that drives the alternator and your problem should go away.

I'm a bona-fide expert in this area!

I'd bet you it's one (or both) of the two idler pulleys for the blower belt. You can find out without spending a dime too. Take them off and put a few drops of tranny fluid in the bearings. (lift up the lip a little with a needle). If it goes away then you know it's them. If it does'nt try the same thing with the idler pulley that's on the regualr belt (driver side)

BTW: If your careful you can take off the rubber/metal cover and clean the bearings. But it's only a short time before they start to go out again. Once the bearing start to degrade it's all down hill.
