Be careful using inserts. They are steel and hold and transfer a lot more heat than the aluminum around them. If you are going high HP, I would suggest not using them. We also go with a colder plug when using inserts.
I'm trying to find later heads with more threads that are ported. I can't find heads like that even looking at Don's suggestion (Patriot).

I would say that it is a personal choice, if you aren't worried about the labor. The front (timing) cover has to come off to replace the cams. Its a bit of work to do that. If I planned on installing cams at any time in the near futue, and if it was not a monetary strain, I certainly would do them at the same time.

The only reason (other than money) you might NOT want to do them at the same time would be to measure specific gains with and w/o the cams.

The heads can be r&r'd without taking the motor out, but its a pain, especially if you plan on using aftermarket head studs, which, of course, are recommended.

There would not be a significant gain with the ported heads over the non ported heads, in your case, wether you use cams or not. Its all relative. The mistake a lot of people make in calculating HP gain on different mods is assuming the gains are cummulative. If you add up all of the gains you get with particular mods, they will not add up to the total gain with all of them together. Hope that makes sense.

In your case, running a 4lber, I think you would probably get the best gain out of cams and oversized valves, vs. ported heads due to the amount of air flow. Change to an aftermarket blower and the whole deal changes though.

We get $1000.00 for the swap (heads) at our shop, and an additional $75.00 for the cam swap (with the heads already off). This does not include parts or fluids.

Tim I don't have a 4lber I'm at around 17lbs boost... So I might see some benefit to ported heads and cams...

All of the Patriot heads, that we have seen, are the early style.

Although there has been alot of negative talk about them, we have not really had a problem with the earlier style heads. The biggest problem (please don't take offense here) is customers changing their own plugs and ripping the threads out due to overtorqueing.

Tim,

Thanks for the advice! Looks like I will only be doing this mod if I decide to go with a built motor. $2,000+ doesn't seem worth it for the gains I would receive with my current mods.
