Roaring noise

My 2001 has 7,600 miles on it now. When I bought it had 3,000. The owner had already let Ford change the oil 4 times (every six months). Well at 6,000 miles I changed the oil and replaced it with Motor Craft 5w-20 just like it says. When I started it up I heard a noise that sounded just like a rough wheel bearing sounds, and it sounds like it only does it every other revolution of the motor. I drove it for about 500 miles and then decided to put in Amsoil 0w-30. It seemed to help a little but not much. This noise can be heard real well when next to a wall (drivethrough) but can still be noticed well in the cab and outside of the truck. Any ideas on what this is, or what can I try to fix it? Its almost like the oil Ford used was thicker than the stuff I used. Thank you!

Do a search for "piston slap." It's been an issue since 1997. Ford says "it's normal," and "don't worry," but . . .

When I went to 0-20 Mobil 1, it got about 90% better.

So you think it is piston slap, it not only does it when its cold but all the time even when it is hot. It also sounds like it is coming from the bottom end.

I can't say for sure because I cannot hear it. But if it came when you changed your oil . . .

Mine slaps cold or hot.

As said above, sounds like piston slap. I run 10w-30 Mobil 1 right now and it knocked about 50-75% of the noise out.

The only things I can think of that might make a "roaring" sound in the engine compartment are the fan, belt, power steering, alternator, a/c compressor, or the supercharger.

Sorry, then, for the misdiagnosis of piston slap, which is definitely a knocking sound -- like a diesel.

Is it kind of a light scraping noise at start up's? Then you give it say 5 min and it goes away? If so what maybe happening is, the chain tensioners are losing pressure. Some times if the have a slight by pass in them the force in the tensioner drains down say over night or in a matter of hrs. This means you have to build up oil pressure then the fully extend again. Noise goes away.

You can PM Superfords he may be able to explain it better but that’s my thoughts.

You know, I just jogged my memory and I remember back when mine was new I had to have both tensioners replaced and a new belt installed at 400 miles. After that it would make a sound like a slightly loose heat shield, etc at every revolution of the accessory belt. I put new belts on it again (this time at my expense so I wouldn't have to go back to dealerland) and it stopped. Try that before you tear into the tensioners. I do know that Ford had a problem with the factory tensioners on some of the '01s. When one of mine went bad, it sounded like a diesel on steroids when hot. Good thing for me the dealer replaced both at the same time.

Its all the time, lets say you have a bad wheel bearing in a boat trailer and you spin the tire while it is in the air and it makles that really rough noise. Its just like that but only about every other rev.

Pull off your supercharger belt. It's easy to do, and will be a quick indication if you're getting noise from the blower/belt/idlers/tensioner.
