just my luck...rounded the block drain plug

So now I am wondering where the hell to install the temp sensor for the electric fan. The plug wouldn't budge and decided to round off internally. Is there anyway I can pull this plug out or is there another location to put the sensor?

I tried using different torx bits and stuff after the part where the hex got rounded but it doesn't seem to work.

I was so looking forward to installing my electric fan today too.

Try beating a socket into the plug that is slightly bigger. Then heat the area up around the plug with a torch etc... and try and loosen it. Also try hitting the plug straight on with a hammer before trying to remove it, that might help in somecases.

I'm not familiar with the location of this plug and how much room you have to work with but those things might help.

So you stripped the threads? Or rounded the head? If you just rounded the head, use some vice grips and get it off...it you stripped it, ten you have some more issues...

I'm assuming you're talking about the oil drain plug?

If you stripped the threads on that, then you might need a new oil pan...

this is the plug on the block to drain the coolant above the oil filter. It uses a hex to remove and the threads themselves are fine just the recessed part of the plug is now rounded instead of 6 sided. I tried beating another larger hex socket but no luck. The idea of drilling it and using an easy out had crossed my mind but if it didn't come out AFTER I had drilled a hole in that plug, I would have been even more screwed.

Going to have to find another option for that electric fan temp sensor.

Well if you have the resources. Tack weld a piece of steel to it that you can turn. Or you could always try using the rounded nut removers that craftsman makes. They work like a charm. The is of course only if the head of the allen bolt isn't recessed. I am not sure of the position of this bolt so i am not sure what is exactly do-able.

the plug in question is underneath the freeze plug. Has a recess for a 5/16 hex. Found a picture on the net....

Try a different wiring kit.Mine has a probe that goes between the fins on the radiator near the inlet side.Much easier to do.I wouldnt be to comfortable with your setup for the sake it might one day leak.Just my .02.

it was a 5/16 hex and the only reason I tried to remove it was because that is where the sensor was on the truck I removed the e fan kit from. It was no where near the size of a 3/8 rachet head. I think that would look more like a fill plug on the differential? The fan is one from LFP but is very similar to the JDM one I have seen pictured.

Where would I find that other kit with the probe in the radiator?

Thanks for the help so far guys

Have you tried taking a flat head screwdriver (slighly bigger than the rounded out portion of the bolt) and tapping it into the bolt? It might be worth a try...

that sounds like a good idea but I went to the local muffler shop and had them weld on a header bolt to the plug so I have something to grab on to. It looks like it will work but I won't be able to try until next weekend. I have also sprayed the crap out of it with wd40 to see if that will help.

Thanks a ton for the advice guys, I really appreciate it
