rear cover diffential leak?

I used the search feature, no luck. Has anyone noticed what seems to be a leak from their rear differential? Mine looked somewhat damp, I didn't have time to check level. I have planned on installing a new rear cover but didn't figure I was going to be forced to. A guy I work with, former service writer, said Ford doesn't use a gasket just RTV? I guess with 29,000 miles it's time to change the oil anyway!

Oh, it looked damp around the rear cover.

be sure that it's not a pinion seal leaking.

the oil can leak down from the seal and work its way to the bottom of the housing and appear as though the cover is leaking.

and yes, there is no gasket, it's just silicone sealer.

good luck.

later,
chris

A little "wetness" around the edges of a dirty diff cover is no problem -- unless it's really wet.

Your friend is correct -- the diff cover has no gasket.

Changing the rear end fluid at 30K seems like cheap insurance. I changed mine at about 5K and was horrified with the amount of metal bits in the fluid.

Yeah that describes it exactly, I checked the level tonight (ok). Plan on changing it prior to the SSOTN event on the 13th. Superfords, I checked the pinion seal (ok) thanks though for the reply's!
