speed sensor?
speed sensor?
kinda an off the wall question but...the dvd navigation i have in my lighting has gages built into it like the exact speed,volt meter etc...but the thing is i need to tap into a speed sensor off the truck...pioneer wont tell me where it is...and a friend i know that werks at a ford dealer cant find it...does anyone know where it is and what color combinations it is???
Yeah what superfords said. My brother has the Pioneer AVIC N1 in his Lightning and they didn't tap into one of the speed sensors. Since it's a GPS, your speed is determined by satelite and not your truck.
yeah i have the pioneer avic n1...but the gps doesnt pick up the speed...in my old truck i had to tap into the vss in order for it to werk...but if someone could come up with the color code and which conector its in would be great...
just looking at my '03, not a specific wiring diagram for your truck here, but it should probably be the same.
the speed control servo is the silver and black metal thing between your air filter and your engine compartment power distribution box (fuse box).
base part# written on top of the servo is 9C734
it has a 10 pin black hardshell connector plugged into the side of it.
you are looking for the wire in pin location 3 or the third hole from the bottom. note that pin 2 is empty, so although it's the third hole, it's only the second wire. mine is Light Grey with Black stripe.

What a minute here...... How can the nav system possibly know where you are if it is not tracking the satellites? The whole premise of the system is that it triangulates location, speed and direction from up above. If it uses the speeed sensor and you do burnout, are you then lost? Something is wrong. The Nav system should be completely and totally seperate from the vehicle's own speed sensing system. Oh, the sensor is on top of the differential. They die frequently, but Ford uses one part number for almost all their vehicles, so you local dealer stocks lots of 'em for about $ 18.00 each. Install time is about 5 minutes.

pioneer navigation systems use an input from the vehicle speed sensor.
I understand what you guys are saying about triangulating speed from the satelites. I'm just saying that I've had two pioneer nav systems and they both required a vss input. on both of my trucks they were taken from the vss wire to the cruise control servo.
on the nav screen there is a little speedometer shown that looks like a real gauge, maybe the signal is used for this.
another thing... Kerno, using your example of a burnout affecting the gps. well obviously you wouldn't be using the navigation system at the dragstrip. if anybody out there needs navigation to go down the 1/4 mile, then there are bigger problems.
but seriously, along the same line of thinking... what happens when you go through a tunnel and lose contact with the satelites. are you then lost? maybe the vss is just sortof a backup or redundant signal to verify things?
I'm not sure, just sharing the little bit that I know about the system.
BTW, the speed sensor on the rear differential is for the ABS system and is not the same as the VSS.
I believe that the VSS is calculated off of the OSS or output shaft speed sensor on the tranny.

i know what everyone is saying about the gps, but as was sed is that there is a lil screen that shows gages and etc, it doesnt want to werk unless it is conected to the vss, pioneer tells me other wise, but yet it hasnt werked in either of my trucks unless it was hooked up to the vss, and then no one wants to give me the wireing color and locations because they tell me im goin to burn out my system because i know nothing about electronics, but yet i have made wiring harnesses and hydralic kits for const. equiptment, and im a diesel mechanic...but what do i know...and by the way thanx for the color combos...i jus need time now to hook it up...
For most navigation systems they will primarily use GPS for the position and speed. The speed-sensor wire is primarily used to "keep you navigating" when you temporarily loose satillite connectivity (tunnels, tall buildings, etc) that way you don't "get lost".
There is a speedsensor wire ON the stereo harness (remember, we have speed sensitive volume in our stock radios?) I forget the color off the top of my head, but I *believe* it is grey-green colored.
You don't need to go anywhere else in the truck besides the stereo harness.
The only other PITA tap that most Nav's require is "reverse" signal as well, so that the Nav software can tell when you are driving in reverse instead of flipping the map around and attempting to reroute you.

For anyone else that was looking (I know I was!) Thanks to Sal's help, I tracked down our VSS wire!
There are two plugs on the back of our OEM radio. One is the main harness (two rows of pins), one is the CD changer harness (3 rows of pins).
The CD changer harness has 9 wires in it, only 8 of which go to the CD changer! Lurking in the second row, all by its lonesome is a GREY/BLACK STRIPE wire! This is our +12V speed-pulse signal! All the other 8 wires are straight throughs to the CD changer plug.
There are actually two seperate ground leads on the main stereo harness, they are both BLACK/GREEN STRIPE. This leaves me with only one unidentified wire left on this harness. There is a RED/BLACK STRIPE wire on the main stereo harness next to the power & accessory wires. Havn't figured that one out yet.
