Thumbs down JLP Airbox and BlunderTube is tripe

I'm glad I bought it second hand! Let's see... Tackwelded pipes near the MAF/filter connection, with 1 to 2 mm of gap all the way around to let in plenty of unfiltered air... Mounting brackets? NO. Shake, rattle and roll. The thunder tube is a clownhorn, the inside is rough and chips eaisly; resembles a bad paper machete project, has poor, loose fittings for the breather lines (can we say unmetered air after the MAF?) and cracks like a Golden Graham.

Guys, it's my opinion and observation that these parts are severly lacking in quality. I am really glad that I didn't fork over full retail for them, and I'm dissapointed that JLP would sell these parts in this unacceptable condition. If I decide to use box, I'm going to have to seal the ring around the airbox pipe inlet, figure out a way to mount it securely and keep the oppsite pipe inlet (the one near the fenderwell) from bashing up the hole. UGH. The blunder tube is going in the trash. I don't want chipped fiberglass flying around in my rotors .

If you bought these parts used, how can you be sure the previous owner didn't cause the problems you describe. I'd feel a little uncomfortable about bashing one of our big 3 vendors over the quality of a used part. May have been more appropriate to ask if others have noticed the same thing with their parts. Just my .02.

Even used, I doubt an air filter kit/enclosure could see much abuse. From what he described, those qualities came from the vendor.

I sure the previous owner carefully cut off the inside airbox inlet, ground off all the welds and tack welded it in 2 spots, 2mm away just to cause grief and suspicion.

I've seen other boxes, and unfortunately this condition has been repeated. The tube tends to stess and crack at the lip on the airbox side, and the insides chip and flake. It's sickning, and this quality issue needs to be addressed.

Well, I can't help you with your JLP parts, but if you are interested, our PSP FASTair box is built to the highest standards. The box itself is aluminum, and is not welded subsections, but a single sheet of metal, folded up and tig welded at the seams. The tubes are press fit, then tig welded to the box. Our setup requires using our 12" filter kit (or one like it), so that means the MAF seals to one side of our box, and the CNC billet adapter mounts to the other side, and the box is sandwiched between. That gives a superior seal, and the customer can choose to add a small bit of silicone for extra safety if desired. Some people claim our parts cost much more than others, but that's because they are made to superior standards. Just FYI if you are interested.

When i bought my jlp air box it was made the same way. I was sooo dissapointed and couldn't believe they were that careless. It's not bashing when it well earned criticism. I had to seal mine up. I just hope other people with this product were smart enough to look it over and found these faults before installing it and allowing small amounts of unfiltered air to constantly run through the engine. Pathetic if you ask me. I didn't spend 200 bucks for something I could have built in 30 minutes. i wanted quality.

Hope this helps others make the right choice when they make there next purchase. Other than that though I have never had a problem with jlp and love them and there tech support to death. They are a great company.

And yes, Sal's parts are top of the line. Everything on my truck is from his shop and I have never been dissapointed.

Glad to see you are happy with my part .
I can assure you that there was no abuse of that product on my behalf and it is in the same condition as the day I bought it. I honestly realized those gaps you were talking about or the loose holes in the thunderpipe. Maybe that is where some of my engine problems stem from...
I bought it because it looked cool

Also, Unless you are a show car I would not get the thunderpipe. Mine cracked were the pipe meets the MAF.

From: IN,
I have both and I have to say Ibought it in JULY.Do not see the gaps around the air inlets in fact I didn't see any the only thing on the box I noticed was at the MAF connection. I sealed it w/ silicone to the box. As for the tube I did see the bare fiberglass and was alittle concerned. No chips at all thou.wonder if oil in the tube could cause the chipping?I wandered about sealing it w/ something but i'm not going to experiment.JLP has been very helpful vendor to me and Johnny uses these parts on his own truck.Just wonder if any changes were made?

This post is way out of line. You bought parts second hand, how can you blame
JLP? I think they've sold in excess of 6000 of these and you seem to be the only
one with this problem. I also think it's a cheap shot for another supporting
vendor to jump in and try to promote or sell a competitive part.

I had some minor issues with fitment on the JLP box, but overall find the design, quality, and workmanship to be excellent. Two years on the truck and it still looks and works as well as the day that I bought it.

GHead -- I agree with you that this post was out of hand, and that Sal's post was a cheap shot (wassup wid dat, Sal, you are normally quite the gentleman). But the 9 second bit is also a cheap shot. It's completely irrelevant.

This post is not out of line. I bought the JLP airbox directly from Sue @ JLP and was extremely disappointed with the quality of the unit. My "NEW" unit had the same conditions as those described above. There were also parts missing that were supposed to come with the kit. After giving it about the good 15 minute look over and being disgusted with the quality of that piece of *****, I boxed it back up and sent it back to them. Then the sorry p.o.s.'s there at JLP went against their return rules posted on their own website and would not give me a full refund! I will never ever buy anything from JLP again they can kiss my a$$. They also lied to me numerous times over the course of a six week period saying they hadn't received my payment. I finally had to confirm this myself with UPS and prove it to them. Definitely the worst product and customer service of any of the Lightning vendors and I have dealt with just about all of them.
