Seized Eaton

I took my truck to the track last night for the first time. At the end of my second run I heard a bad grinding noise. I thought my transmission had blown. Limped the truck bad to the pit area, and opened the hood. The supercharger was making a really bad grinding noise. Shut the truck off for about 10 minutes and tried to restart, and the engine wouldn't turn over, the supercharger was seized tight. Had to remove the supercharger belt, and limp the truck home.

Any ideas what might have happened? bearing failure?

Oh, my time on the run was 12.85 @108.5.

1. the case warped
2. the supercharger (ate) something which locked it up
3. the gears are shot.

Pull it off and take a look and report back.

If it is the case, it might be cheaper to pull your rotors and simply put them in a MP blower case.
However it sounds like it is you rotors, with tight tolerances

This is disturbing news for all those of us who just took advantage of the September Apten special. Where there any telltale signs before it seized up? What other mods do you have done to the truck? Post some pictures after you take the 'charger off and keep us posted please!

The truck has a 4lb pulley, e fan, and FTVB.

I didn't start this thread to blame Apten, I have been very pleased with the performance from their porting. Right now, I am hoping for something simple, like a bearing failure.

I Agree, just because a part has a problem you can't automaticaly blame a mod or the Modder.

There are a crap load of ported eatons out there doing just fine.

I just want to make clear I'm not blaming the mod I just want to stay posted about what the cause was. My truck has very similar mods to his and I don't want the same thing happening to me. That's kind of what this board is about.

2000Black, I understand what you are saying. I just didn't want this thread to head into the wrong direction.

Ouch.

If the motor would'nt turn over after it cooled off a bit? Then I'd say you have more than just a bad bearing.

Fortunately it's just a *blower* issue. When you pull it I personally would also pull the IC and clean any debris / shavings out of it. Might as well if you've got it tore down that far.

BTW: My Apten ported blower is doing just fine.

Wishful thinking on my part?

I just pulled the oil fill plug on the supercharger, and oil oozed out. So, it didn't run low on oil.

I'll tell you what your problem may be, because I have seen this exact issue with another Lightning.Sometimes after the outlet of the ported eatons are cut, they can leave a "raised" edge on the machined inside core. When a set of rotopaks are placed in,they can expand very slightly under high rpms, thus hitting the burred edge and causing the bloer to eventually stop. This happens after the engine is shut down after hearing what can be best discribed as a loud buzzing sound that can wake the dead.If these sound like your symptoms, than it is a very good possibility that this has happened to you. The good news is that when we pulled out the rotos they were barely marred.A little light touch of a fine grinder on the perimeter of the outlet port and just touch the edges of the rotos and bingo...back in business! I couldn't believe that there was so little damage to the parts.BTW- the truck now runs like a raped ape. i hope you find this to be helpful and....good luck!
