Is this a new scam?
Is this a new scam?
Got this in response to my truck ad here. This is the 2nd one of these I got from someone in the UK. A quick search on Yahoo for the company name doesn't turn up anything. I'm thinking scam.

Well, she said once payment is confirmed by you they will pick up...
Maybe it is not a scam.
It is not unusual for buyers outside of the states to buy cars they cannot get there. (Lightning)
Who knows....

It's a Scam, and when the Scam is outside the USA,
there is no one that will be able to help you
Didn't Doug post about the fake cashier check scam
(someone did, and I believe it was him)
If you want play a long a while and see how they want the transaction to take place, BUT EXPLAIN YOU WILL NOT EXCEPT A CASHIER CHECK, and see what they say.
The Fakes we were warned about are VERY GOOD.
Soo good your Bank will except it, and even release the money to you sometimes. BUT later they'll find out it was a fake and YOU and ONLY YOU are responsible to pay it back, NOT THE BANK. AGAIN NO ONE WILL BE ABLE TO HELP YOU CAUSE IT'S OUTSIDE THE USA

So fake certified checks are out there. Interesting. When I decided to sell my truck, I called my credit union to find out the process. They told me that I should wait for any check to clear before signing over the title, that included certified checks. I guess it's becoming more prevalent.

I went through the same thing. Even received the check. The post-mark on the envelope was the United Arab Emerites. It was issued by Discover. I have to admit, it's a pretty good counterfiet job. So, I call Discover to let them know. They verify that the address of the issuing bank in IL. is fake along with the check# and routing code. The check was made out for $40,000. They explained that there's a big scam coming from Saudi Arabia these days. They say that the 'buyer' sends a check for more than the agreed price. The seller deposits the check. The buyer asks that the seller just 'refund the difference'. Seller cuts a $15,000 check and mails it off. Then finds out from his bank a week later that the $40,000 check he deposited is a fake. He's out $15k. I really can't believe that people would fall for this, but the people I spoke to at Discover said it's been happening lately.
The guy I was dealing with emailed me a couple of days after I got the check and gave me the shipper's name and email. Said he would be contacting me shortly. I told him I didn't receive anything and if I did, that I was going to destroy it. Told him the truck was sold. (no, it's not sold yet). Haven't heard from him again. BTW..this guy goes by John Dikko. He's got a yahoo account. May'be others have had the pleasure of doing business with him.
