Plugs, Why?

Is there a reason to install new spark plugs when you get lightly modded? What is the whole reason behind it? I have been running with a 4# pulley, cold air intake and a tune from PSP for months now with no problems. However, I am installing the NGK plugs today that I had bought at the same time I had the other mods put on. Will I notice anything different?

Thanks,

Jay

I have been running on a 4# pulley and tune, with the stock plugs, with ZERO issues. I will change them out, when schedule permits...

The stock plug is a bit too hot for a 4#er and repeated WOT blasts.

I suspect that if you have a "good tune" you'll find that they slightly white. If your tune is nice and fat? Then you might be ok? Why risk it.....

I've been running factory plugs on my mods for several months now. A friend of mine, same thing only for a much longer period of time.

Basically, if you're not detonating, you'll be fine. I've been involved in numerous races from 20-120 MPH with no problems.

The colder plugs just give you a little more guard against detonation. I'm not running a lot of timing though (16*).

I would change them, it's cheap, not too hard, and it could possibly save your a$$ and your a$$'s money...

Exactly.

Plus when you put the plugs in yourself you KNOW that they are tightened properly.

I was going to change mine in my L until I found that the tr6's are just stock replacement. So now I question as what plugs to use? I've also heard that stock 12 are cooler than tr6's ? (but like I said I've only heard that so ???)

Welp, my new plugs are installed. While they were being installed it was noticed that a spark plug wire was really bad. So it was changed out. What I noticed right off the bat while driving is that the knocking/pinging noise I would hear at higher speeds went away and the engine feels very smooth and even feels like it has a little more power. The power increase is probably because I was loosing some power with the knocks/pings. So I think it was a good investment!

Plug wire? I thought the coil packs were sitting on top of the plug? Is there a lead from the pack to the plug? Inquiring minds want to know. I am gonna change my plugs shortly, and I would like to know if I need to look at the coils closely or not.

You are right. It was the coil pack. I just grabbed hold of the wrong term.

Good, I was pretty sure there were no plug wires, but wasn't 100% sure.

Anyone here think that bad plugs could be causing my disgusting ETs at the track? Even with my best crummy 60' of 2.20, I'm only running 14.6 at 95mph.

It was THE CORRECT MOVE to change your Plugs Jay, and your prob very lucky you did Glad it's running better, WOO HOO

And for all the 4 lbr's that run stock plugs, Of course they'll work, and ya it'll run good (I ran 6lbs of pulley with mine for a while)
But lets not forget the reason we change to a cooler Plug is to build some safety (forgiveness) into your set up

In the old day's you could drive a Small Block Chevy around for years while it was pinging, or check your plugs to find them as white as Gators face during a Colonoscopy

But with a L motor, Running Too Lean, Detonation, one simple bad tank of gas, OR WRONG OCTANE, a clogging Fuel Filter or Injector, can cost you over 10K. You DO NOT want to be running too hot a plug when one of these possibility's surfaces, (or many other that can throw off your tune).

Example:

Extreme Cold Weather when our computer can AND WILL add up to 3 Degrees of timing.

Out of town fuel, (maybe with a winter additive, that lowers Octane) or just ****ty fuel and or octane

Elevation, Inlet Air Temp, Humidity, and soooooo much more.....
DON'T EVER FORGET, Silent Detonation can kill too.

Duende, yes in theory your plugs can be slowing you down

Black F150, TR-5's are equal to Stock Temp Range
Tr6's are 1 cooler, BR7's 2 ranges cooler
