spark plug question
spark plug question
Ok, IF my truck was modded with a 4# lower, predator tune and 160 degree t-stat with a cai, what would be the best plugs? I have seen ngktr7ix, and the ngktr6 both rated for high boost/nitrous applications. For now, no nitrous, but what about the other HYPOTHETICAL mods? Are the denso plugs better than ngk? Thanks in advance
Justin

One grade colder than stock will be fine with your pulley. The thermostat and cai are not going to have much effect on plug choice.
We have always had luck with the standard NGK's with no fancy ground straps etc. and they are the cheapest. A few friends like the denso iridiums as you don't need as much spark strength to ignite the mixture. Either one should be more than adequate for you as mods are minimal. I personally just make sure the right grade of plug is used with a standard style and then make sure your ignition is strong enough to spark the mixture.
Times may change one day but for performance all the fancy plugs don't work to well as the spark is shrouded.

My take is this
Denso's cost 3 times the price FOR A REASON,
SO I USE THEM
I'm also now through the 3rd summer on the same set, and thats with lots of Boost, tons of timing, lots of Nitrous
and many track days.
I melted TR-6's in 500 miles but a clogging fuel filter did played a part. Point is many will say just go with the NGK TR-6's, And I agree "for mild moded L's", 6's are great Plugs for the $,
But I personally feel from running both, the Denso's do give a better idle and are known for NO Mis-Fires at High RPM

Thank you all very much. I am gonna have to get someone who knows the predator inside and out to help me tune mine. Since the Wizard of Noz hasn't melted the denso's yet, it looks like they are the plug to go with.
Racetested, I have one more question for you. If some of the fancier plugs are shrouded, should I index them to get a better ignition of air/fuel?
Rob, have you used a predator much, or do you know someone who has? I am a little far from a reputable L tuner, but I have access to a dyno, and would love to add more timing and fuel after the plug swap.
BTW, this is for you Rob.

WOO HOO, I love it, THANKS Grimace
Sorry No I DO NOT have a Predator, but it does clearly appears from all the Predator Post around here lately, and the friends I have that do use it, YOU WILL SURELY NOT HAVE A LOW TIMING PROB using a Predator. I understand your better off using the
""Performance Tune"" BUT WATCH OUT with the "Pulley Tune"
Most seem to agree EVEN WITH A PULLEY, your better off using the Performance Tune and not the Pulley Tune. And if you DO use the Pulley Tune, you should pull 10% timing, and add 10% more fuel.

I always run 93, and I am at around 1200 feet. Now, about the predator stock pulley tune. Everyone says don't use it. If you can change the parameters of the tuner, then can the pulley tune be adjusted to make it safe? The million dollar question is this. What makes the pulley tune too aggressive? Too little timing, too lean? Is it just a tune that can't be adjusted without flashing in a new one? I am ready to buy more mods, but not an engine.
Thank you all very much for your help. If you ever need anything and you are in the okc area, like welding or something, hollar at me.

Blown347Hatch,
You mean your squeezing it that much on stock plugs? I'm supprised they are holding up! I'd really like to see a close up picture of one too.
Personally I've run (w/a 4# lower) stock, TR6, and Denso IT20s (in now).
All in all I like the Densos best. They have been so smooth from the moment I put them in 4,000 miles ago.

Go with the TR6's and gap them at .038
I have tried other plugs, but allways went back to the TR6's. I run them at 20 lbs of boost with my KB and have never had one of them fail in any way.
You can run them with your setup and if you add more mods they will still work great.
I don't know why anyone would put Denso's in their truck. I am not a fan of them, infact they scare the hell out of me. They will never go into my truck. I have seen way to many sets of them fail.

Grimace,
When I say fancy plugs, I mean ones with multiple ground straps.
Like other people you will have to make a choice on a plug and gain personal experience and preference. We have some customers say the denso's make the engine run smoother, and we swear by just a very standard ngk. I couldn't tell you why there are variances on the same type of vehicle with similiar mods.

I'll have to take them out to photo one.
I've been watching that Brisk thread. Some of the tests look interesting. I'm thinking, what is the down side to the Brisks? If they are junk on longevity, I will go with the Denso IT-22's. What's your take on those Brisks?
