There goes my mods, thanks Mr. Bush.
Tim,
I wish things were that simple. The reason we have these "safety nets" is not to coddle losers, but to protect winners. Too many homeless, unemployed, uneducated, underperforming, and underpaid people will result in crime, social unrest, perhaps even revolution. It has happened before and the nations you cited in your other post have all been ravaged by it firsthand. We must give these people a place to go, a route to take, a chance to survive. What happened to...
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breath free.
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me.
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
...I do agree that we should not let the poor, the down-trodden, the unfortunate, and the lazy fester in their underachievements. I do believe in welfare reform and I do believe that those who are able to work be put to work or face starving. But there are other circumstances that make the poor poor. Some of these poor 01 XLT SPORT so crassly referred to as "useless human beings" are scurrying from job to job praying they can feed their family for the rest of the week. While I'm not here to judge whatever decisions brought them to their unfortunate predicaments, I do think that we, as a nation, ought to help them. That is fair to me.
My father came to this country with $60 dollars in his pocket. He paid his way through school, earning a Masters in English, and an MBA in Finance. The lesser people in this thread might have referred to him as poor and useless back then, but today he is worth more than those who continue to hold their noses high...combined.
Here's some reading that may shed some light on the working poor: "Nickle and Dimed: On Not Getting By in America" by Barbara Ehrenreich.

Liberalism is a mental disorder. There has to be something wrong mentally with someone if they look at the facts and then still act as if they don't exist. John "Rambo" Kerry has missed 76% of the Senate Intel. committee meetings since Sept 11, 2001. He has voted against every major weapon system that we use in combat today. He wants to increase our funding of the UN and he wants to make the War on Terror more "SENSITIVE. I know I don't want him to command the greatest military in the world, do you?

All you Union haters have all the answers, But when you really think about it if it weren't for Unions you would most likely have no power, water, gas, police, fire, ect. These are the things that support life and these are the people that keep this country going.
I ask you this when ever there is a National tradegy 9-11 -Hurricane what ever who is there hepling out showing the most support its not Joeshmo construction or some big Law firm it is UNION people for the most part, Yes they are probably being paid but I didn't see a line of Do gooders cleaning up after 9-11 or hundreds of trucks going to upstate NY and Canada when they were devistaded by Ice Storms and people were freezing to death or even most recently Hurricane Charlie How many private contractors or small non union shops helping people get back on there feet.. All this from the Laziest worker's in the world if thats the case I and glad to be one of the laziest workers in the world
I hope you get a clue because obviously you don't have one there are lazy people every where Union or not maybe your just jelous of the union worker.
Feel free to spell check and high light all my errors I just love that. My goal in life is to win a spelling bee

Wow, this was one of the best reads I have had on this subject for a long time.
I am a Skeltonite ie: conservative. I am not sold on the Bush domestic policies but I sure as hell am not going to vote to perpetuate or increase our welfare state.
I believe that we, as a society, should care for the truly destitute but I have close contact with some that "work" the system such as having a third and fourth offspring when they can not properly care for the first. Remember, they are paid "per child".
The travesty of our system is that to remove the "takers" from the rolls would severely impact the Democratic party voting base and it therefore will probably never happen. Same as, what do you think the chances of our honorable congressmen ever overhauling the retirement, lifetime healthcare and other benefits they receive after holding office for only one term. Our Social Security System would be getting top priority if they had to rely on it but they have their "own" system.
Arnie could be the best thing that ever happened to Caleefornia as he is working toward major reform in many of these arenas.
Slick, your post slipped in before mine. Just gotta ask. Who signed the paycheck for all these union guys who helped in the disasters? Were they just paid from the AFL/CIO petty cash fund? Hell no, they were paid by corporate america, in one way or another.

The overtime law did NOT help “Bush’s friends in cooperate America” as you put it. It actually hurts cooperate America because many more people are eligible for overtime pay that had not received it before, so as I read it, the net sum is business will be paying out more money now in wages then before…
As far as President Bush raising taxes sometime in Jan or Feb 05, do you have some information that nobody else does? I have not heard this and trust me I read a lot of things from all sides before I form my opinion. I am not blinded by anybody as I have stated I do not think Bush is the best man, nor do I agree with everything he has done. However, at this time, and with the choices that are available this November, for me he is the best choice.
Factory jobs are going away NOT because of President Bush or any other President. You REALLY want the truth then here it is:
Factory jobs are going away because that is what the vast MAJORITY of us want. We want to buy things real cheap but we want to be paid HIGH wages therefore it has been dictated to business to make things as cheap as possible and pay us as much as possible.
To do that companies HAVE to send work overseas where the labor is cheap. Companies do NOT do it for profit, they do it to stay in business and be competitive. Why do you think some Fords are made in Mexico? Because labor is cheap.
I get tired of hearing so many people whine about jobs going overseas and then blaming someone in office, be it republican or democrat. It is neither of their faults and ALL our fault. Either you accept your part of the responsibility or you’re just adding to the problem. Please don’t tell me everyone here at this site goes and buys the most expensive completely American made product because that would be complete BS.
You want jobs to stay in America then you either have to pay more or make less money or both. Until that happens more jobs will move overseas because that is what the majority of Americans WANT to happen but many are to naïve to actually admit it or understand it…
01 XLT SPORT,
Just curious as to what type of job you have that allows you to be so snobby? You must be an executive officer of a big company or at least a doctor or lawyer?
Also, weren't you one of the bleeding hearts whining over on the F1 China conspiracy thread about how China is taking over too many industries...?
For someone who doesn't like John Kerry, you sure are acting like him...

Personally standing on the corner with a cardboard sign is the highlight of my day.
Next comes the scrounging through garbage bins. Followed by smoking old cigar butts. Home of the Free because of the Brave.
All while peering down my nose at the one legged idiot sitting on the corner begging.
Hey, if he or she is a different shade of pale....hell I feel even more better.
Vote...hell that is for people who give a ****!

I agree with some of your Companies moving out because of cost.
I do balme alot of this on Medical in this great country who can't take of there own. These big companies can't pay for medical or increase the wages so employee's can contribute more.
I will use my self as an example
start my present job in 91 payed $2 bucks a week for full medical dental ect.
now I pay $75 a week for a PPO seperate for dental and vision all this and to boot Corperate America is pushing to do away with retiree medical..This benefits the Gov because it forces workers to work until full age to recieve Social Security which is the biggest problem this country is gonna face.
I know what I pay is not that bad compared to the private sector I really feel bad for the small business guys it is like 10k a yr

Well said XLT.
I believe that there is a large percentage of the population that doesn't truly understand that if you want to be able to buy the latest greatest piece of electronic gadgetry, a computer for example, for say $600.00 you sure can't pay assembly workers twenty something per hour.
Therefore if our domestic brands are going to compete with offshore brands their only choice, if they want to stay in busines at all, is to have their product built in offshore facilities.
Sorta like you can't have your cake and eat it too.
SLICK, you are right on there, Medical and Dental for me and my wife, since I'm now self employed, $14,376 per year for a reasonable PPO.

How many homeless poor have you chatted with online? How many conniving greedy bastards insinuate themselves into a system, profit from it while bad mouthiing the less fortunate. There will always be extremes. Funny a Lawyer , is it Corporate Tim ?....intimating liberalism along with one bullet one kill chastises both the moneyed and have nots in the same paragraph.
