I took the S/C off and........

Since I have the weekend free, I thought that I would take the supercharger off to see if there is any oil on the intercooler.

Did I find any? YES, and something else.

Now look closer.

Yeap, its the coating off the rotors of the s/c.

Can you beleave this, the truck currently has 11,600 miles on it. Some of those miles have been hard. I figured that there would be oil in the intercooler but not this stupid rotor chit, and theres alot of it.

What am I to do with the damn rotors. Since I have the s/c off, Im thinking of calling Apten Monday and get it ported, will they fix it? While Im at it, will they also port the upper intake?

Oh what to do!?

Since I own an 03 born within a couple days of yours, I found the coating coming off a little scary. I'd like to find out exactly what the coating is, so I'd like to have you mail me a small piece of it and I'll have an analysis run on it. If it is teflon, they can be resprayed, but all the material has to be stripped first. I don't think Apten does the recoating, but you'll be impressed by the change in performance. Please mail it to: me at 22426 S. Avalon Blvd., Carson, CA 90745. I'll lab it as soon as I get it. Please give me your e-mail address as well.

Rotor flaking is fairly common. When Brian was at Apten, he told me this flaking wouldn't hurt performance and to get the rotors recoated was expensive.

a few people change the rotors to Cobra rotors.

they are graphite and not coated with anything.

as for the coating it is a type of teflon, (so oil from our wonderful PVC system wouldn't stick to them)

VERY STRANGE INDEED

They had a prob in the early years, so in 02 they went to a new
coating that is MUCH BETTER, (or so we thought)
judging by your color, I'd say it's the new style too

Example:

The Older Coating was more of a Black Paint Look,
where as the Newer Design, is a Graphite look AND COLOR

01 (or Older Coating)

02 (or Newer Coating)
Other than that one edge you see there on mine, I am not missing any coating after 13K

I WOULD STRONGLY RECOMMEND
The Lightning Enterprise PCV Fix
http://lightning-enterprise.com/pcv.html

I've been using it for quite a while with great results

(NO FLAKING ON MY ROTORS)

Thanks for the link Rob, I'll try anything to keep from doing this again. Damn thing was a bitch to remove.

Ya know, if I had the $$$$, I would just buy a KB.

Will Ford cover flaking rotors under warranty? and if so, I wonder how you could appraoch them to say, "The teflon is flaking off my rotors."

Big Man,

Have you run any kind of a fuel injector cleaner in your truck or racing fuel? Could something like that even cause a problem with the coating on the rotors?

The kit includes a WORKING PCV to replace the NON-WORKING one we have on the Passenger Side.
And the kit also includes ANOTHER PCV/Check Valve that is
added to the Drivers Side.

This way when our motor goes into reverse flow (which it does)
it can not push out the Drivers side and up into the Lines, Boot, and T/B.

(Here's the second valve giving that goes on the Drivers Side)

The kit seems to take care of @98% of the problem,
however whenever I take the T/B off, I will usually find a very small amount of oil on the back side
and a small coating in the upper,

BUT NOT ENOUGH TO MAKE IT DOWN TO THE I/C
(as seen in the pic of my I/C at 13K)

WOW!!! After seeing the pics that Big Man posted, I am telling my dealer that I have heard there is a problem with flaking rotors and I want mine inspected (I have about 25,000 miles on my 03). I'm going to tell them that If no flaking is found I will pick up the tab for the inspection but if the rotors are flaking I fully expect Ford to pick up the tab and warranty the rotors. Also going to tell them that I will not pay unless I am allowed to witness the inspection of my rotors. I am off Friday so my L is going to dealer. Since my truck is relatively stock, I wonder if they will blame my Magnaflow mufflers, FTVB or PSP FastAir if the rotors are flaking? Should be interesting. Thanks for the post Big Man!!
