Exact 1/4 mile?

What is a good way to mark off an exact 1/4 mile? There is an old airport strip near my house that is not being used anymore and I was just wondering how I could mark off an exact quarter. As you guys well know, we dont want to be going over a 1/4.

Thanks!

You can use your trip OD and get close. 1320 feet is the real length....

Or with your mods, run till about 110-113 MPH and that will be like right after crossing the 1/4 traps.

Yeah, I knew about the odometer. I just thought you guys might just have some little trick to getting it exact.

I guess I could just reset the trip and go a little over .2. Right?

Walk it out. Take 10 average size steps and then measure that distance. Then calculate how many steps are needed to walk a quarter mile. It should be pretty acurate.

Wouldnt his traps be between 103-106mph with his mods?

go to home depot and buy a measuring wheel and some spray paint. Type Measuring wheel under their "search" after you click this link mark your start point with the spray paint...walk the quater mile with the wheel going as straight as possible...mark the end with spray paint again.

G-Tech!

Use a G-Tech unit. Make multiple passes, better with a slow-ish vehicle.

With my mods:
6# pulley
Cold air intake
160 degree stat
Diablo chip
Slicks
Traction bars
On cold days I go 12.6 with a best mph of 107.

So ya I guess with the long tubes another 2 mph is not out of the question. So 109 mph or so.

Also...

If you're trying to measure an "exact" quarter mile by looking at your speedo...

It IS CORRECT to mark off at a speed greater than what is indicated on your timeslip. The trap speed on your timeslip is the AVERAGE speed calculated over a 66-foot trap ENDING at the quarter-mile mark.

So if you are accelerating at a constant rate through that trap, the speed on your timeslip is actually how fast you were moving 33 feet before the quarter mile mark.

That's why a G-tech reads "high" on MPH. It estimates your speed RIGHT AT the quarter-mile mark.
