I recently did the same swap. Just push the cd button on the front of the radio twice and it will control the changer behind the seat.

Did the same mod with a head unit from a 2003 Supercrew. Swap took all of 2 minutes!

1. Insert removal tools in head unit holes.

2. Pull out old POS cassette head unit.

3. Plug in harness to new unit.

4. Slam it back in the dash.

5. Insert CDs; turn volume WAY up.

Did the swap 2 yrs. ago Used a 6 disc changer from an explore. On my 01 had to trim some plastic away to clear the hight but works fine. So you can use them also if your looking for a unit! Artie

So you can use either the Mach 460 or the Mach 1000 head units for this? Does the 460/1000 represent that watts in the stereo headunit or the total system power it came from? Thanks guys!

I'm not sure if the radios from the mustangs (Mach 460/1000) will work. They have seperate amps in the car so I'm guessing they won't work in a F150.

I took the 6-disc from the '04 Lightning and put it in my '98 Ranger, no problems

I went to a large truck only salvage yard looking for a head unit to put in my 01 but he said the one that matched up was another Lightning. So you guys have said one from the 03 up supercrew would work also. How about the expedition. As many options as I can get would be nice. Or where to find them.

The mach number designation is total system wattage. The head unit doesn't have a amp as far as I know. Atleast my 99 and 95 had separate amps for everything. Since that is the case you would have to rewire alot of the truck for the extra amps...and at that point you could have had a nice aftermarket system...unless you are trying to make things look as stock as possible.
I was going to try and take a ripped out Mach 1000 system off Ebay and put it in the truck, but decided it probably wouldn't be worth it.

Hey guys,

With the 6-disc in dash, do you ever hear a hum or whine (not alternator whine)? Sounds like maybe a fan as it goes away a little while after turning off the deck.

Is there any fix for this?
Thanks

There is no fix for the hum. Several people have had their head units swapped out under warrenty, including me. Mine is better but not quiet.

I would try and get one off a lightning. Some of the other Fords may have different wiring. Not real sure on that one but I know they changed the wiring between my 99 and 95 GTs. Plus the Expy can come with a Mach system also so I'm sure they are different if they come in a 6 disc.
