How many quarts does the stock torque converter hold? I'm planning on flushing it by unplugging the return line and starting the engine with new tranny fluid in the pan. Would you say 5-6 quarts should completely fill the convertor with new fluid?

here's the TSB:
A/T - 4R100 Delayed or No 2nd Gear Shift
Article No.
01-13-5

07/09/01
TRANSMISSION - 4R100 - DELAYED OR NO 2ND
GEAR - DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES P0781, P0755
AND/OR P0756 - VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 4R100
TRANSMISSION WITH TRANSMISSION BUILD DATES
BETWEEN 7/27/2000 AND 3/23/2001 ONLY

FORD:
2001 E SERIES, EXCURSION, EXPEDITION, F-150, SUPER DUTY F SERIES, SUPER DUTY F-53

LINCOLN:
2001 NAVIGATOR

ISSUE

Some 2001 vehicles equipped with 4R100 transmission, having a transmission build date between 7/27/2000 and 3/23/2001, may exhibit an intermittent, delayed or no second gear condition. Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) that may be set with this concern are P0781 (1-2 shift error), P0755 (shift solenoid B malfunction) and P0756 (shift solenoid B performance). This may be caused by the Intermediate One Way Clutch (mechanical diode style) not operating properly.

ACTION

Verify condition, follow normal diagnostics per the appropriate Workshop Manual. If diagnostics leads to the described condition, replace the Intermediate One Way Clutch (OWC) (mechanical diode style 7A089), Intermediate Brake Drum (7D044) and Intermediate Clutch internally splined friction plates (7B164). Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

Verify above "ISSUE". Refer to Figure 1 for replacement components. Refer to the appropriate Workshop Manual for Transmission Disassembly and Assembly procedures. If contamination is present, a full disassembly and cleaning will be required. Follow all the normal service procedures as indicated in the appropriate Workshop Manual.
NOTE MAKE SURE ALL MATING COMPONENTS LISTED ARE CHANGED. THE MATING COMPONENTS OF THE TWO DESIGN ONE WAY CLUTCHES (7A089) ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE. IF ALL THE COMPONENTS ARE NOT CHANGED, INTERNAL TRANSMISSION DAMAGE MAY RESULT.

NOTE THE MECHANICAL DIODE DESIGN ONE WAY CLUTCH, DID NOT USE A # 7 THRUST WASHER. THERE ARE NO MACHINED SLOTS IN THE INTERMEDIATE BRAKE DRUM FOR THE THRUST WASHER TABS. THE SPRAG DESIGN ONE WAY CLUTCH MUST BE USED WITH A # 7 THRUST WASHER. THE INTERMEDIATE BRAKE DRUM USED WITH THE SPRAG OWC DESIGN HAS SLOTS MACHINED IN THE DRUM FOR THE # 7 THRUST WASHER TABS.

How can Ford get away with this? This is not right. Why should I pay to fix this when it is a known Ford 4R100 transmission problem. Was there not a recall??

Ford and recall don't go in the same sentence
THEY OUGHT TO HAVE A BROOM STICK SHOVED UP THEIR A$$,
and shouldn't be allowed to sell Cars + Trucks for what they did with the spitting plugs, shifting front ends, window gaskets and rod bolts THEY FORGOT TO TIGHTEN. BUT WE DON'T BELIEVE THAT DO WE, we blame it on Mods and tunes and say stupid schitt like
If you wanna play, you gotta pay.

Ford is always well aware of the problem, AND DOES NOTHING ABOUT IT, TIME AFTER TIME. They may make some good schitt, but standing behind it, is a whole differant story unfortunatly.

In a nut shell THEY BLOW,
Spit
Wiggle
and Flap

But I still Luv my Lightning

I love my Lightning just as much as the next person. But I lost a lot of respect for Ford. I am tired of having the fear that somthing might break every time I go WOT. I am thinking my next car will be German made. I used to be a die hard Ford guy. I dont really know what to think anymore.

I was thinking more like a Lightning drive shaft. I am sure they are used to broom sticks by now.

I have an 01 and had the same thing happen. I was lucky as I have the extenderd warranty. Something to remember also if you pop it in and out of overdrive to down shift. It seems to also help this problem come to light quicker. Mine broke at 34,000mi. Artie

I just had the same failure with my 2001 with 42,000 miles. I dropped it off at the dealer today and they will call me when they figure out exactly what it is. Mine is out of warranty, but the service manager told me he would help me out with AWA (After Warranty Assistance). To be eligible for AWA, the vehicle must have less than 75k miles and be less that 5 years old. It has to be approved by the service manager, and if approved Ford will cover 80% of the cost of the repairs. I had no idea that even existed until this morning!

Anyway, my tranny is probably out of the truck as I type. I'll let you guys know what they find.

Just got a call from the tech... he said it's my intermediate one-way clutch, and that I am lucky the tranny is not totally destroyed! He said I caught it just in time. Anyway, he said he will be installing revised parts, flush everything out, new seals, and some other parts. He said he has seen this happen on some super duty diesels but not on a Lightning. He said total cost should be around $1200-1500. Thank goodness for the AWA! Why did Ford not issue a recall on this? or at least repair at no cost if it ever fails???
