Cut Ruslow coils?
Cut Ruslow coils?
I'm having a hard time getting the right drop. I'm shooting for an even 17" Using the DJM arms and 1" aluminum spacers, I think that I am still going to be too low (16.5" or so).
I just got some adjustable coil spacers.
The spacers are only 1.02" when the adjustable collar is removed. The next available lift is 1.75", which is the height with the adjustable collar installed. With 1/4" urethane spring pads, that would be a total minimum height of 2" for the whole stack with the collars installed.
So I'm thinking that I may cut a little off the end of the Ruslow 1,100 lb coil (which will of course slightly increase the spring rate) and use the adjustable spacer. While cutting a coil is normally a bad idea, in this case the removal will not be much and will allow me to swap the springs for the LAST time. I would use a Dremel cutoff wheel and go slowly, so I can't imagine that enough heat would be generated to harm the heat treat.
The Ruslows are the silver ones:
I'm only talking about trimming about 1" or maybe 1.5" (not even a full coil) off of the end that points down and hooks into the lower spring pocket. That would allow me to use the adjustable spacers to fine tune the drop from about 16" and all points higher. I think that the spacers will be adjustable without removing the coils. I don't see any possibility of coil bind or other ill effects.
Comments? Stan?
p.s. -- I just want to make sure that my position of #1 suspension obsessor is maintained. SpeedJunky is threatening my crown.

Edit: wait for me to try them. I just tried to slip them in the Hotchkis coils that I removed. They are too big to fit inside the coil. Will have to pull the Ruslows and see, but I suspect that the ID of the Ruslows is even smaller, as they use thicker coil wire.
Drats.

Sweet
Hope you find a way to make them work or find a set with the correct dimensions. I think I need to cut my front driver's side coil alittle as the truck sits higher on that side. Bugs the hell out of me.

I have cut down the stock coils for a few guys and ½ coil will net a 1” drop, so use that as a reference point. I think you will be there for a while with a Dremel, but if you have a Zawsaw or larger cut off wheel it will make you life easier.
You can cut them but make sure not overheat them as that wil affect the temper of the material. As for the amount not much and definately not a coil unless you have that amount of adjustment. These coils are 50 stiffer than stock.STan
Cutting length of the spring will stiffen the spring up. There is a formula for how much the rate changes when cut x amount

BUT, I don't think that they will fit aftermarket coils. They are about 4.1" OD at the outside of the collar. So be sure to measure the ID of your spring before ordering. I got busy at work today and did not get a chance to call to see if there was another app with a slightly smaller OD (and will still fit in the upper spring pocket).
But I'm trying to get ready for a track event July 10 at Willow Springs, so I may not have time to check it out further before then. I need to get the damn thing back on the road and shaken down. I have much work to do on the rear in the next 10 days also.
