truck will not start first crank

Is this normal?? took it to the dealer they said nothing wrong with it... when you first get in it and hit the key it does not start right away. try again fires right up has done ever since ive got it. it has 19,000 miles on it.. and its a 2001... just wondering if anybody else has this trouble?

Yeah, I wondered about that also - I have a 2000 & it happens radomnly to me as well. I have a custom burned chip, but it happens whether or not the chip is in the ECU.
Cold start soleniod starting to go bad?
Anyone run across this?
Thanks,
Robert

I have a 2003. Had that problem since the day I got the truck. Thought it was normal. Our 1999 expedition was not like that. I really am not sure what it us. It is very random. I turn the key to start it like I normally do, but it does not start, and dies. I either have to keep the key in the start position longer, or try again, and it WILL start. But it could get embarrasing. Anyone?

this is total speculation, but i'll be willing to bet that the starter on the L is the same as the expedition. the L has the supercharger that the starter has to turn as well as the engine. even if the bypass opens when starting, there is just more mass for it to turn. either that, or if the bypass doesn't open until started, the higher cylinder pressures could cause harder starting like a high compression engine has. don't quote me on that though.

After I F'ed up my truck it took several turns to start, but I had 2 cracked/ bent valves in the cyclinder head and 2 melted plugs. Maybe you have a bad spark plug.

If you are saying that the truck turns over, but doesn't fire up on the first rotation, mine occasionally does this too. I really never thought much about it.

same here... except sometimes I have to give it a little gas if Im parked on an upward incline. Its embarrassing for sure...my 99 xlt never did that BS... well it did once, but it was the IAC ...once cleaned it was perfect again..... glad to hear Im not the only one to have this happen more than once.

well I'm not alone it seems ... maybe I'll try giving it a little pedal when I first turn it over to see what happens..

Could also be your fuel pump check valve. Your system should remain pressurized overnight if the valve is OK. If it bleeds down right away when you shut the truck off, it is probably the cause of your slow start since the system has to reprime itself.

That would happen to me when I first got the truck. It was the IAC.

I always turn the key and let the pump run before I crank it. Does anyone else get an ocasional "thump" when you turn the key half way?

It takes about 3 or 4 seconds after you turn the pump on...you can feel it a little in the floor board, but you can hear it more so. I know it didnt do it prior to 30k miles... so Im wondering if my pump may be failing

More likely that pesky check valve.

Does the problem occur on cold start, or is it after the truck has been running and turned off? This was a problem back in the day...

https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...+piston+sensor

The original "linked to" thread has been lost in cyberspace, but roger's post does a pretty good job of turning pictures into words.

May not be the same thing, but the discussion triggered that in my memory.

If it's a "cold start" problem, I'd like to know what it is. My Toyota Sequoia won't crank on the first try after it's been sitting and the weather is below 60 degrees. None of the Toyota guys can figure it out - maybe a Ford fix would at least give us a place to start looking.
