Problem :( Low Fuel Pressure

Any idea guys?

Drove the truck to the store today, no problems ran great. Got in to drive back home and could not give her any throttle more than 1" or she stalls out.
Checked all the hoses and vacuum lines, seem ok.

Now I have an autometer fuel gauge, It's reading a very low 18 psi and will not go higher.

So it appears a fuel delivery problem? Where do I start though?

Thanks for any help.

Possible, seems unlikely but it is at least something to check. You could take it off, drain out the fuel in it and let it sit a bit and then see if you can still blow through it. Just a thought…

hmmm

there was an issue with fuel pumps on the 99 and 2000. I think the main thing was a line comming loose or cracking. There were some pump failures documented as well. That is the 100 percent why i decided on a fuel pressure guage as one of my 3 in the pod.

If that is the problem........upgrade to the larger pumps while they are out. Or throw a couple focus pumps in there!!!

fuel pressure is that low

i wouldn't drive it

i suspect the hoses fell of the fuel pumps

very common with 99-00

the clamps aren't tight enough and over time they slip off

i'll first check fuel filter

than drop the tank and see if ur hoses came off

I'm more than positive that it is the High Pressure Fuel Pump. I had it happen to me on the xpress way. I could turn it on but I couldn't give it any gas because it would stall out. Called a flat bed to take it to the dealer, and that's what they fixed.

Same as above. Likely line fell off one of the two pumps in tank. Common in 99-00.

PS: there is no "high pressure pump". Both pumps are the same. The pumps do step up, and are regulated by lower then higher voltage.

Here is the drill and it is a pain.

What is your fuel level??

If full try loosening the bed bolts and work the whole deal from the top without removing the gas tank.
Sounded crazy to me but after doing it the other way (droping the tank I can see why)

To drop tank just take your time and put it up on jack stands.
The whole job is pretty straight forward.

There are several lines on top and you are working blind. There is a large line out of a seperate outlet. If your not carefull and pull to hard the plastic tank fitting will break (ask me how I know)
Its called a roll over valve and is not normally stocked. I think it was $25

Anyhow, leave the pump alone and grab that roll over valve next to it. A 1/4 turn to the left and it will come loose. Then using a flash light and a long screw driver you can push on the fuel lines and see if they are loose.

Ether way if you have gone that far I would just carefully pull it out and replace all 6 of the crimp clamps with stainless steel screw clamps. There isn't even a flare on the end of the pump fittings to hold the hose.

Be careful removing the pumps. The two fuel pumps and pick up filter and fuel level gauge are all together and if you bend the rod or are ruff with it it will effect your fuel level reading when it is all back together.

That big huge cloth bag is the internal fuel filter (strainer)

Carefull with your electrical connection and don't forget there is a connector lock that you don't want to break when you pull it apart..

I couldn't siphon or drain my tank first because of the roll over valve but I only had like a 1/4 tank of gas. I did the whole job myself in about 3 hrs. If I was to do it again I would lift the bed. It is only 4 bolts and a few electrical connectors and a couple blocks of wood or maybe a cherry picker.

Good luck and be carefull about cigarets and trouble lights around gasoline.

Oh yeah one more thing.

If that vent hose is stuck, just cut the sum beech out where you can see it and use a nipple and couple clamps when you hook it back up.

I ended up having to do that anyway.

It goes back in a lot easier when the tank is empty.

isnt running fuel lines into the cab a little dangerous to moniter fuel pressure( hope your not a smoker), what about one inside the engine bay like the ones they sell on ebay?
