An Open Letter to Johnny Lightning Performance
An Open Letter to Johnny Lightning Performance
Today, Saturday, May 29, Johnny and Sue Lightning (www.johnnylightningperf.com) came to Texas for a dyno tune day for Halo and NHTOC members. We set up at Horsepower engineering (www.horsepowerengineering.com) for the day. Unfortunately, we had some issues with HPEs dynos they own and lost the ability to measure a/f after the first two trucks. Fortunately, John had his handheld tools and we still had all other dyno functions. All in all it was an amazing day any way you look at it.
The dyno problem was taken care of in a flash. Chuck at HPE refunded our dyno money and let us use his shop, tools, and dyno late into the night at no charge. That was a great help and we’ll be sure to return to that shop in the future. It was clean and had both an eddy current and dynojet chassis dyno.
Today, a number of lightning and harley truck owners got to see the true JL in action (that man is very, very talented!) and to see just how big his heart is. He didn’t want anyone to go home unhappy from the dyno troubles so he charged the group NOTHING. ZERO. NADA. He used his NGS, his PC software, the Dyno, and obviously his experience to tune a dozen vehicles and produce some amazing HP results. John truly has a heart as big as Texas. He worked until 11:00 pm until the last person went home. 7:15 AM to 11:00 pm and nobody got charged a fee to tune their trucks…(although a couple insisted on paying him) There were a number of vehicles that had “issues” coming into the dynoday– some severe and some not so severe. A number of folks left very, very happy campers – issues resolved, and some pretty solid HP and TQ numbers.
I feel extremely fortunate to have finally met Johnny and Sue in person. For all the internet is, it isn’t a measure of the person you are typing to or reading from at the other end of the modem. For those of you who haven’t had the great pleasure to meet Johnny and Sue, make it a point to do so. If you haven’t bought anything from JLP, please give them a shout and support a wonderful vendor.
Thanks JLP!

I missed out on this
If only I would have heard about this earlier I would have taken my truck there.
I been working in Houston for the past 6 months and this weekend I came home (south Texas) to see my girlfriend.
When is JL ever coming back to Houston. I would love to meet him in person and have him dyno tune my L.

Ken:
Sue and I appreciate all that you have done and are still doing..This was a huge task for you to take on and organize,I must say we are very impressed on how well you did this.. Everything was just perfect,we had some issues with some equipment but we were able to work around the issues and continue on!
I want to than Chuck and his crew @ www.horsepowerengineering.com.. For allowing us the use of their Awsome facility! I know chuck felt really bad because of the equipment failing at a time like this. But it was out of his control. He did everything possible to help get the issues resolved. and i'm very impressed with how he worked with us late into the night! thanx Chuck.
I cannot even begin to remember the names of everyone. But i want to thank each and everyone for taking the time and driving many of miles to be with us,1 man drove around 850 miles 1 way! another drove around 1,300 miles to come.I was truley floored to here how everyone drove so far to spend the day with us! I must say that the food @ the cookout was
simply amazing! I wish i could have spent more time just sitting around a talking to everyone, but time would not permit..We lookforward in doing this again in the not so far future.Maybe we can have more time to talk and kick back and really get to know each other on a more personal basis.
Ken again thanx for this HUGE responsibilty you took on.I know of No one that could have done a better job!.....

JLP is a class act!
I never told you all but last year when I blew up my motor after spending all that money on it. It was JLP who helped me get my truck back on the road! Johnny & Sue have invested time and money in my project. It's that kind of devotion to our trucks and the people who own them that builds lasting relation ships!
This year when I was told by another tuners group that they could not tune my factory 90MM MAF set up it was JLP who sent me a Delta chip and said here try this out. Worked great and is getting better by the day!
Thank you Johnny & Sue, we appreciate you.

Sorry as I don't remember everyone's names there but here's some pics I took before I had to head home...

Rob C's sweet Harley truck was the first strapped to the Dynojet, but due to a bad A/F sniffer we had to switch to the Mustang dyno.

Since I was up next they strapped my truck up to the Mustang dyno first. Johnny leaned out my rich A/F and cleaned it up real nice giving me about 20ft/lbs down low where it's noticeable around town.
Rob C was then strapped up and right away they noticed a dangerously lean condition being caused by the fuel pump/filter so he was done for the day trying to find a fuel pump.

Next up was Double Trouble (Butch) with his unbelievably clean 2003 Harley...and again before he could get any pulls the RPM sensor on the Mustang dyno went south. Here's the dyno operators trying to get it up and running...to no avail.

In the meantime Ken and Johnny work to get the plugs changed on 1BAD4D's newly upgraded truck.

There was four times total that Ken was changing plugs for this event so this position became a familiar one for him...

Finally after calling around to find any other dyno shops that were open (none during the memorial day weekend), everyone decided to let Johnny tune to the best of his ability without the A/F meter on the dynojet. So with his trusty NGS scan tool and they dyno graphs...some awesome tunes were still put out by this man!
Some pics from outside the shop:

Last but not least...a nice dyno day burnout:

Turned out to be a pretty good day with lots of good numbers from the Harley and Lightning guys...glad I could be a part of it.
