Help a rookie learn to drag :)...
I should be running my truck for the first time at the Midwest SVT challenge and am looking for tips.
This is my first time ever drag racing so anything would be appreciated.
Whats the best way to launch? How do I cut my best 60' times? Pretty much, what do YOU do when you race?
My only mods on the truck right now are a filter and catback.
Thanks

Don't expect to much when you first get into this.
There is a lot more to it than most folks know.
Pretty exciting when you get up there and stage.
I wouldn't worry about burn outs or warming the tires untill you get a few good runs under your belt.
Work on your reaction time.
Stage shallow and leave on the last yellow. Consistancy is the key.
You will prolly be bracket racing so just go out there and have fun.
Chance's are you won't break anything anyway.
That's what these trucks were built for.

eposey,
Hope to see you there! Good to hear they'll be a few L's out there.
I've only been racing a few times but it seems pretty easy to get into. Get there early (they open at 8 I think) so you can get a bunch of test runs in first. Look for me I'll try to get there early also.
The tree was the hardest to learn. If the track is prepped well, which they're saying it will be, then last time I was there (my first time racing) I was nearly able to mash the pedal the whole way.
FYI, there is NO gas at Rt 41, and no BP Amoco for miles so be sure to plan to arrive with 3/8 to 1/2 tank.

eposey, what time are you leaving to go up?
Maybe we could meet and drive up together, if you go slow I may be able to keep up.
BTW: it took 2 hours to drive last time, and I think you live 45 minutes south of me.

Remember there is an hour time difference at the track too! And bring some ice to cool down your intake (and old towels).

With a stock engine and stock tires, you will not need any skill at all -- it's pretty much just wait for the last yellow, stomp the gas, and keep the steering wheel straight. Yawn.
Things won't get interesting until the power levels go up.

I will be there when the gate opens. Why don't you two meet me at the gas station right off 65 at SR 38 (southernmost Lafayette exit) and we can all go up together. Of course, neither one of you will be able to keep up with me

I would like to meet up with you guys at 65 and 38 if ya want to. I talked to that Sublime Melody guy and he said they did indeed pay for extra track prep.
I plan to leave here around 6-6:30 AM, go out to 65 and take that all the way up.
Olefafl, dont worry about me drivin fast, its Jim you gotta worry about. If you've never ridden with him... DONT

Lower the rear tires to 28psi
Drive around the water box
Do a short 2-3 second burnout to clean the tires off
Pull up to the starting line slowlly, creep foward till the top ligh is lit. Then wait for your opponent to pull foward and light his first light. Then pull a few more inches foward and light the 2nd light. Then your opponent will then pull foward and light his 2nd bulb.
Depending on how they prep the track will tell you how hard you can launch. Normally you will bring the rpms up just enough to remove the slack out of the drivetrain, and then roll into the throttle.
Relax when you pull up to the line, getting nervous won't help. So just have fun, and learn from each run.
Good luck

Extra sleep would be the greatest
