How many miles do you have on your lightning? I wouldn't recommend putting in a synthetic oil until you put a few thousand miles on it. And as for which brand to go with I would have to agree with blown347hatch, AMSOIL was the first snythetic oil ever on the market. But that is only my opinion.

Motor Oil

Try Crisco vegitable oil. It's perfect for all driving condition.

I used Redline oil in my Lightning. I guess oil is oil. They all do the same thing to an engine. Just my opinion.

I was told by a ford master mech that the knocking or tapping many are hearing when your L is cold (usually mistaken for piston slap) is due to the weight of mobile 1 (5-30). Because mobile 1 does not make a 5-20 he has me using the Valvoline 5-20 synth. Oil changes pretty clean and no engine noise.

I use Royal Purple 3w30 was going to change back to Mobil 1 but found Royal Purple for the same price here:

Oil TownUSA

Only 49.99 for a case of 12 plus 10.00 shipping comes out to $4.99 per quart you can't hardly beat that Mobil and syntech will cost you that or more.

I always use 6 qts of Mobil 1 with a Purolator PureOne oil filter. I feel that oils like Amsoil, RedLine and Royal Purple are formulated more toward racing use and not so much toward everyday driving. THIS IS ONLY MY OPINOIN. I know that with Mobil 1 you can't go wrong.

I build over 30 engines a year for use in professional motorcycle racing. We have won many races, pole positions and last year won a national championship. I have tested many oils using our engine and Dynojet dyno's.
I will list them in three categories:

Good wear protection HP Increase:
1)Motul 300V Power (from France)
2)Mobil One (from Germany)

Good wear protection NO HP Increase:
1)Yamalube Synthetic
2)Valvoline Synthetic
3)Castrol Synthetic

Poor wear protection (would not run it if you paid me)
1)Redline (JUNK) smells bad too
2)Royal Purple (some HP increase Poor wear protection)

I'm sure some people have had good success with some of the oils I don't recommend, that's fine. The thread starter asked for advice and this is mine.

One more thing the motors we run rev to 16000 rpm (600 cc) the clutch and transmission all share the same oil.
