Nice truck! Here is your ticket...

I think the local cop was sitting across from the DMV today just waiting to nitpick at people leaving there. I just finished getting my new drivers license and as I pulled away from the DMV, the cop pulled out and followed me. He flipped on his lights and pulled me over.

Like the good citizen, I pulled over and he comes up and says, "You have too much tint on those windows." He asks for all the usual stuff like insurance, etc. and while I am getting it out the cop asks me about my A-pillar gauges and other stuff and says that I have a nice truck. He takes all my stuff back to the patrol car and I am thinking that I built up just enough conversation with this guy so that he will just give me a warning. Not! He uses his little light reader doohicky and says that I am too dark and gives me a $160 dollar ticket!!!!!!

I am gonna go to the judge and tell him I did not know it was too dark and try and get the ticket reduced. Any suggestions?

You actually got a fine and not a “fix-it” ticket. Usually, or use to be, they would give you a “fix-it” ticket so that if you removed the tint or removed what you had and put a tint on that meets specifications you would not have to pay any money.

You could always be proactive and take the tint you have out and either leave it out or redo it with the darkest tint you can legally have. After that go to court and explain to the judge you didn’t know your tint was to dark and since you got sited for it you corrected the problem and if possible have it checked by your local police and see if they can give you some kind of note that states it now meets current specifications.

It could save you the $160 you might have to pay and you wouldn’t have to worry about any more tickets. Something to think about…

What's the saying, something like "Ignorance is no Defense"

Something like that, even if you didn't know you are still guilty. I would go to an optometrist, and say your eyes get dry when driving in the sun. Apparently, I haven't done it, but they give you a doctors note saying you can have tint as dark as you want, and bring that to court. Search the forums, I guarentee something about this is there.

I dont know what the laws are in Alaska but here in Jersey it is illegal to have tint on any window from the B pillar forward or in our case the side windows. If you do have tint then it has to be for a medical reason and you must have a permit stating such - even then it can only be a certain tint. My advice is pay the ticket because if you go to court and fight it and lose then you will have to pay the fine plus court costs. By the way, I am a police officer and my windows are blacked out

I was only thinking about going into court because I asked the cop if I removed the tint then could I get the fine reduced and he said the only way to do that would be to remove it, take a picture, and then go to the judge and ask for leniency since you fixed it right away. I thought that maybe he was just saying that to get me to go to court, lose, and then have to pay court costs too, but why would he bother saying it? It's not like he would get a bonus or anything? Right?

You might be right about the Hemi because I have a custom front license plate and not the state plate (also illegal). The point is that he has never seen a Lightning from the front... only from the back because he can't keep up.

Cops are really lax about tint down here... its so hot and bright out during the summer that they dont make a fuss over it... I had limo tint all around on all my trucks except this one...its not legal either...but not nearly as dark as the limo was. Some people, like my parents...have tinted wind shields....which is totally illegal...but every tint shop in the area offers it to you.... just no reciept...same goes for limo

The cops dont like the mirror tint though...lots of people get pulled over for that

Thats is exactly how it is here in Alabama also.
But there are always a few exceptions to the rule.

In NJ many times they will make you peel it off in front of them or tow you to impound instead. It has happened to 2 of my friends and one friend it happened twice.

Never happened to me though...yet

remove the tint, then pled not guilty, in traffic court, put the cops tester in question, it can't be right! and agree to be retested. Case won! Or pay the ticket leave your L cool and risk another $160

I thought I was screwed one night as well as California nitpicks everything. Pulled over at night, cop went to passenger side, which I still had the window up, and my tint is 19% (next down is 11% limited or "limo"). He didn't say a word about it
Also, got a warning on another stop about my open intake. Could've gotten a fix-it-ticket for 200 bucks.
