HELP! please intercooler prob

hey, i took my intercooler pump off and took out the top screws and alot of black powder stuff came out. not from the pig tails but behind that. is this normal or should i take all of the black stuff out. The pump works but seems to not be pumping hard enough. i tried it with the hoses dissconected and it didnt seem to pump too much air can barely feel the air coming out. also before and after i disconnected the pump i blew through all of the hoses and none seemed to be clogged, also no fluid is surculating. What should i do. going to fun ford weekend and i would like to fix it.
thanks for the help
Chris

Don't think you want to run the pump dry. When all the fluid has been drained out of the pump or blown out like you did it will take a little while for the pump to pick up suction again. Just make sure you have plenty of fluid in the hoses and pump and cycle the pump on and off. It should work...

From: Colorado,
DC Motors have carbon brushes as far as I know. Haven't had my pump apart.
Black stuff was prolly just some carbon from the brushes.

Like Jeff said don't run it dry. But you should be able to rig something up with some heater hose and "Look, listen, feel" whats going on.

Water pump impellers don't move a lot of air. Plus without the water resistance it's going to turn a lot faster.

The good thing is that it is working.

What's the problem anyway? Wether it's circulating or not or not coming on from the thermostat switch?

I saw the truck today...

first clue that something's wrong is the 'charger doesn't whine. we took it out on the streets and punched it and you hear nothing. a check of the boost guage, however, shows over 10 lbs (he has a 2 lb upper, so that makes sense)...

also, when other lightnings are running, you can see the fluid circulating in the intercooler coolant reservoir--his doesn't do this.

that's all I can tell you guys from what I've seen. hope someone knowledgeable can chime in!

-Mike

You need to supply power seperately to the pump to see if it is burned up. You should see it circulating once the engine is warmed up. Good luck...

Why buy somebody else's problems when you can buy a new one for $160.00.

The intercooler is the heart of our power system, don't cheap it.

I thought 45 bucks for another pump was a good deal...guess not.. I'm trying to give some options here that will not cost an arm and a leg...my mistake..

Sorry, I didn't mean to bash you.

45 bucks for a good used pump is a helluva deal (if that's what it goes for), it's just that it's hard to know the condition of the pump without testing it.

Not bashing anyone, but thanks for the info on used pumps, not that I need it now, but it may come in handy someday, and I know I'd try the $45 option before the $160 option just in the chance I could use that money on another mod later. Oh, as Jeff said, try powering it from another source to see if it will oper.

hmm

sounds to me like the brushes in the motor of the pump are gone. It will work with no fluid, because it's not under load, once loaded up, the motor is bogging out.

The easiest way to tell is to bench test it. Go down to the local hardware store and buy some poly tubing to fit the pump (like 60 cents a foot). Fill up a gallon bucket and run two wires to the connectors on the pump, positive and negitive. You can even jump it off the battery on the truck. If it pumps the fluid, it's working.

How many miles on the truck???? Check your connections to the motor. I would even check the voltage comming to the motor. If the pump is being denied voltage or the connection is bad, that could cause it. What happens is, there is voltage to get the motor to spin, but then it starts to " starv" if you will, so it's constantly trying to catch up.

Good luck
