I have a small smoke on startup problem. I had the dealer look at in in November. They could not duplicate the problem - it has gotten much worse now. Is it the valve guides? And what will they do to fix them?

I don't always get smoke on startup. Sometimes it's nothing, a little puff, or this.

My truck smokes on start up also, not as much as yours but still does. It will smoke more in the winter time than the summer, from what I understand that is for the most part normal. I did put on the swanson kit that did help alittle to keep out oil from going into the intake boot. sorry I cant hlp more than that.

The swanson kit would help but you can also disconnect the large vacume line that the swanson kit would hook up to. Then take a wet vac and suck the oil thats at the bottom of the inner cooler cavity.

This will not help the oil thats coated on the inner coller but it will slow down the smoke.

Black smoke= fuel

Blue smoke= oil

White smoke= water

I would precisley measure your engine coolant and intercooler coolant level and monitor it.

My truck had the early cracked intercooler and if I added coolant it would smoke like that on hard exceleration.

Now I am not saying you have a bad leak but you definatley have something going on and I doubt it is oil related. From what I see in your pic thats my two cents

 

Both waters are fine.

But oil is low, after I got the oil leak fixed I started using about 1qt every 1000 miles.

BTW: its an 01 with 40XXX on it.



Oil leak was fixed 2 times for old owner, and 2 times for me. After the first time for me, it felt like I lost power? After 2nd time it used 1qt of oil in 500 miles, dealer changed it free, and now its 1 qt for 1K. The old owner said it didn't us any oil.

 

there is defniantly something bad wrong with your truck. I shouldn't be using near that much oil. It is very possible that the valve seats are gone. Thats what the signs indicate anyway. Other than that i really don't know.

Prior to getting the oil leak fixed the second time, the truck used 1qt/1k miles however the leak was clearly visible. Spots on the garage floor, burning oil smell at stop lights, etc.

Something is very wrong. If the dealer 'can't duplicate' then they are clearly incompetant.

I talked to my dealer today. I am going to send them a CD with 18 starts on it. 5 no smoke, 13 with smoke.

I took off the intake boot today, there was no oil in it, or on the TB. I couldn't see into the TB.


Bob, are you going to the Purdue car show this weekend?

Take a look at your exspansion tank from your radiator. See if there is a slight black ring around the tank. Around the top right about the coolant level.
I hope not but if you do those are signs of head gaskets!

Does your state require you to use reformulated gasoline? And if so, do you know if they blend it with alcohol?

Is there a possibility your truck may have a fuel delivery problem either at startup or when stopped? Something like a stuck injector or malfunctioning waste-gate, anything that could cause excess fuel to be dumped into a cylinder. If you are running rich or burning oil, your plugs should tell you.

If you are too rich, fuel could be making its way to your oil pan accelerating your oil consumption. Also, a motor burning a rich mixture of an alcohol-blended fuel will occasionally put out whitish-blue smoke, especially when the exhaust system is cold and still has moisture in it.

 

I would say the guides are ok the 4.6 n 5.4's are not prone to wear guides, sounds like the valve stem seals are letting a little oil seap by and then burn on startup. my 01 did the same thing even at 25k, when i put the cams and springs in I also replaced the seals while the springs were off. there has not been one puff of smoke since and the oil level stays on full mine also used about 1qt every 1k before the seals

HOPEFULLY, the dealer will take your video proof into account in addressing the obvious issue.

As for the car show in Lafayette, can't make it. Hoping to make it to Putman Park on Saturday to watch fellow 1%-er SVT_KY carve some corners then head to IRP on Sunday to get some baseline numbers and practice the reaction times.

When I checked my coolant levels this morning, I did not see a black ring. I didn't take the cap off - I will take it off tomorrow when it's cool and look.

I don't know if the state requires blended gas, but a local station changed from Marathon(?) to Citgo because they would not sell gas that was not 100% gasoline. I've never smelled fuel in the oil and the truck runs fine.

I have a 2000 Expedition. It just started smoking at startup. . . JUST LIKE YOURS, not always, but when it did, we're talking UNCLE BUCK. It has 73k miles. Always serviced by Ford.

I brought it in. The diagnosed a bad Mass Air Flow Sensor. Because of the amount of fuel being dumped in. . . they said it needed the plugs replaced. . . It still did it.

They thought it was a leaky injector. . . did all sorts of tests, leakdown, removal & leakdown. . . nothing. STILL DID IT

They finally said it must be the valve guide seals. . . they pulled both heads, and supposedly replaced / rebuilt them.

after having it there 4 weeks, we got it back on a friday. the following tuesday, it started again.

1st only on start up, then again aftre its warmed up. . . Its going back on Monday.

Now the SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT came on. . . ?

SO. . . it more than likely may NOT BE the Valve guides. . .

$1100 later. . . stay tuned
