6lb vs 4lb

when i bought the truck used it already had 4lb on it, so i was lucky... but now im considering changing to 6lb...

i tried doing a search but didnt really get much help... just found alot of people mentioning the word "6lb" in a post...

so im here to ask... should I do it? its a daily driver, which i only drive about 15miles per day... but still, something I need to depend on... i know that anything you do to a stock engine, you are taking a chance on... but still... i dont really want to be living on the edge... i know alot of guys are running 6lbs with no problems... heck iv seen some 8lbs....

so bottom line... should I do it or not?

future mods i had in mind: efan/pump/long tubes/full exhaust/thermo

No. On a daily driver I'd stick with a 4#

anyway, i think im pretty close to the end of the road as far as mods go for my truck... Id like to do an efan/pump and FULL exhaust (LT,high flow cat, xpipe, bassani) and then maybe a few minor things like 160' thermo but then i think im pretty much done...
Scott, you got it bad my friend

In all fairness......
I can't tell you how many times I have said "Ok, that's it, no more mods, I'm happy now

Oh yeah, Id' stick with a 4# too. Go with a interchangeable upper if you have to have more. I can honeslty say the idler kit did away with belt slip so that (to me) isn't an issue anymore with a smaller upper.

with your ported eaton and stock lower end, I'd stick with the 4#.

putting a 6# with a ported eaton would be like running at least an 8# lower on a stock eaton.
and you know that isn't a good idea.

I have been running a 6# lower and 1# interchangble upper for 40K miles now on a stock lower end. And it is a daily-driver with some runs on the track. No problems or troubles.

But..let me say...I check my plugs continually and monitor the tell-tale signs of the dreaded detonation closely.

The mod-bug is hard to shake

What kinda 1/4 mile ET/MPH times are you getting with your set-up?

I run a 6lb with no problems. I am starting to have a small miss in my L now though. Alot of ppl say that the 6lb is worthless with out the e fans but I see that you are installing them in the furture.

with the blower porting, stick with a 4lb lower until you get your motor rebuilt.

Which blocks and cranks costing as much as they do now, its not worth tearing yours apart for the little bit of power.

The issue of what size lower you run, has everything to do with the boost your Supercharger is designed to handle.

This whole idea of referring to a lower pulley by pound rating has become antiquated, due to the ported superchargers and Magnumpowers and Kenne Bells.

So, the big question should always be....what total boost are you running right now.

I believe Scott is making a total of 12lbs of boost.....so in this case...a "6lb" lower will be no problem....his total boost would then be about 14-15lbs.

So, with 12lbs of boost.....you can change to a 6 lb lower with no problem. That would give you about 14 lbs of total boost.

I drive mine to work quite often (70 miles round trip) and I have a 6# lower and a JL 1# upper. With the JDM full meal deal exhaust I don't see more than 14 psi on a cool day. As long as you don't beat the crap out of it every chance you get, then it shouldn't matter what pullies you have on it. Of course that is my opinion. I have had that combo for over a year now. Prior to doing the exhaust last year, I had a 4# lower and the JL 1# upper and saw the same psi.

I'm not saying that I won't have problems ever, but I made sure I got the right plugs in there, the gap is right, I use Sunoco Ultra 94, and the chip was tuned on the dyno by JDM, so I know the A/F ratio is where it should be.
