03/04 CD player in 01L

I'd like to switch the stock unit in my 01L with one of the units from the 03/04 MY.

I assume it should just drop right in. Am I correct? I know there are different versions for different Ford cars since the mounting is different. I'd guess they did not change the mounting in the dash, but want to make sure.

I wouldn't waste your money on another stock unit, just buy a nice after market one.

I put an aftermarket one in my L and installed the stock 03 6 disk in a 2001 f250 without a problem

Excellent.. it should fit.

I don't want to go with an aftermarket HU. They are a magnet for thieves. I have had the stock unit with the thunderform and 2 JL amps. Sounds good enough for me, without having to worry about a busted window.

Just last month some cars were burglarized on the street. They hit all the cars with aftermarket HU's. Mine was overlooked since it appears stock

Mine has the stock head unit. I have two JL w6'es behind my seat, and a JL 500/1 amp screwed in under the passenger seat. Somehow, my car was broken into, without breaking windows, and the stole the only thing that was physically attached(screwed) to my car...the amp... weird.

But it should fit...good luck bro.

I did the same mod, it fits fine, but you do have to cut a little plastic inside the radio cavity in the dash to make it fit right. It's easy and once the radio is installed, you can't tell the difference.
