also realize that your light may come on either later or (more typically) earlier based on what your doing with your truck. You can be driving down a hill with a quarter tank, still 25 miles away from your light and get the light. Also stopping on a downwards incline can make it come on a tad early. Also a little vigerous driving will do it too, just to show that the light isn't necessarily always consisent, it generally is but not always.

Mine came on in traffic one afternoon, drove a nervous
15 miles home. Next day filled up with 22 gallons!
Usual fillup is 21 gal, average 280 miles per fillup.
Close to the same milage I got with my 98 F150 w/4.6,
but it ran fine on the cheap stuff!

I tried to run mine down to remove some old fuel and drove 40 miles after the light came on. After that, I floored it through 3 gears and still drove to the station. I got sick of waiting and just refilled it.

I've driven it 44 miles once the light came on. I was cruising 65 for those 44 miles.

I made it to the station the next morning ... no prob. I think it was about 36 miles after E. Anyway I appriciate the quick responses, let me sleep a little easier that night knowing I wouldn't run out of gas before my appointment the next morning.

Later fellas,

If it comes one level ground while driving I say about 3-4 gallons left. I have gone 50 miles this way. If it comes on when nailing the gas or parking on a hill it is unreliable and will lock on until it is refilled.

So I guess it's safe to say that whenever the fuel-pump loses it's prime the sensor for the light will switch it on! hence the low fuel, downward hill, fast start, curving road.

has anyone tried the diagnostic trick with the 03's? the one where you hold the trip button in and it displays all sorts of stuff? does it work on 03's?

Same here. I've gone fortysomething miles on the fuel light. Drove REAL easy too. It wasn't fun.

I drive mine below the red line alot. Many newer vehicles come with reserve. I have been able to drive 40 miles starting at red mark.

Well if my wife had paid attention the other night when the light came on then we all would know how many miles you can go before you run out of gas. <sigh> I had to run out and bring her some premium gas. My guess is she ran about 50 miles.

I just tried it on my 03 L and it worked! All sorts of other diagnostic info as well. If I only knew what some of it was.
Pretty cool info though!

I'm flying with ya! This was one of those "special" circumstances times. She has drive my L maybe a total of 100 miles since I've had it.

BTW.... I put 24 1/2 gallons of fuel in the truck....
