HOLY SHEET!!! ford engine block prices really have gone up!

Hi guys.

I've got some engine parts for sale, (NOTE: I am NOT trying to sell them here in this thread, so please don't ask about my parts or asking prices here) so I just called the parts department at the Lincoln/Mercury dealership where I work to get an idea of what new parts were going for.

I have heard from several people that Ford really jacked up the prices on blocks, heads, and crankshafts on or around the first of the year. I just hadn't taken time to check for myself.

you guys know that I finished building my motor, well I had purchased the parts for it (new block, crank, heads) last September or so.

I'm glad that I did, because while the price of heads and cranks has stayed basically the same, the price of blocks has nearly DOUBLED!!!

keep in mind that "list" or "retail" prices may vary significantly from dealer to dealer. sometimes above and sometimes below the MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price). also, if you "know sombody" at the dealership, or you shop some of the online warehouses, you may be able get these parts at or near employee cost which is generally 10% over actual dealer COST and well below "list" or "retail" pricing. if however you were to walk in off the street as regular joe schmoe and order these parts over the counter, you'd likely pay very similar to these listed prices.

I actually found out that I can get the crankshaft NOW from lincoln dealer cheaper than I did 6 MONTHS AGO from ford dealer.

anyway, here are the part numbers and prices:

6 months ago @ Ford dealer:

5.4 Lightning Block: 3L1Z-6010-AA LIST PRICE: $708.12

5.4 Lightning Forged Steel Crank: F75Z-6303-AC LIST: $659.85

5.4 Revised (8 plug threads) P.I. Cylinder Head BARE:
2L1Z-6049-DA LIST PRICE: $419.10 each PLUS a $250 core charge each.

today @ Lincoln/Mercury dealer:

same block list: $1333.48
same crank list: $653.00
same bare head list: $461.07 each plus $150 core charge each

just thought I'd mention it.

later,
chris

Oh crap, looks like I have to call my ex girl and get her father to get me the special discount. Damn that sucks, I was hoping I never would have to make that call.

Chris, thats because the Price of Steel is up 68% since Sept of 03.
Copper is up 68%, Cast Iron is at a all time high like never before seen in the history of the USA. My Industry is going totally bonkers right now, in my 27 years in it, I've never ever seen any price increases like this before, on April 5th all 4 American Drain Companys (roof drains, floor drains, trench drains, etc...) are going up 110%, YES 110%
Brass, Stainless, Black Mal, Galvinized, Steam Pipe and Fittings,
you name it. Chrome, tubular products, bla bla bla
ANYTHING MADE OF ANY METAL

REASON, in one word --->CHINA<----

They are rebuilding their entire infill structure in the next 3 years to host the Olympics. They have basically bought up all the raw material available in the entire world over the past months,
AND THEY'RE WILLING TO PAY WAAAAAAAAAAAY MORE THAN USUAL. I have at least 50 Diff Letters from 50 diff Mfgr's all explaining it, and all pointing to China. The two Steel Pipe MFGR 's left in the USA have even had to cut back to 3 or 4 days a week
""only"" due to the shortage of raw material already. Have you seen the price of copper in a scrape yard lately ? OVER 1.00 a lb FOR SCRAPE.

Hold on to your shirt, the next year is gonna get interesting..........
I may start hunting for the People that REALLY build our built Motors and pick one up wholesale before it gets out of controll.

if you can buy used (new condition) Cobra Block for $450.00,
Navigator Motors for $499.00,
BRAND NEW 4.6 Aluminum "Mountain" Blocks
Strongest production aluminum block made! For $799.00
4 Valve Heads for $500.00, etc. I don't see why I can't find a 5.4 with I Beam rods for 1500.00- 2000.00 ???

Scrap metal is at an all time high prices right now. It's where we're exporting metal to more countries now than we were.

Those Ford price hikes are a load of crap. Steel prices have gone up, I know because we buy lots of it. However, if steel prices go up 50% (which is alot) and steel is say 25 % of the cost of your product the real price increase is .5 x .25 = .125 or 12.5 %. The rest of the price increase is a pure money grab.

I'd say it has more to do with SUPPLY&DEMAND...

not only the supply/demand of the materials as stated above, but the demand of the actual blocks.

everybody is trying to buy these things.

there is a higher DEMAND than for say a Taurus 3.0L block.

so naturally the prices can be set higher because people will pay to get the goods they want.

it's the american way.

make your money when and where you can...

I'm not faulting ford. I'm just glad I bought my block last year!

later,
chris

Its a great time to be in the demolition buisness, LOL!

in the last 2 months we've picked up 3 huge jobs where we have to pay the owner for ripping down there building cause there's so much scrap steel.

You are 100% correct, I know the owner of Charlotte Cast Iron,
He was paying @$ 50.00 a ton, then it went to over $200.00
and he said they expect to see $300.00 before this is over

Weird that this is the price I come up with for the block...
Item Number List Price
3L1Z6010AA $708.12 $545.25
Engine - Cylinder block
CYLINDER BLOCK, Expedition, Navigator, 5.4L, New NVH Block - 4.6L, 5.4L 2003 - 2004

And this for the crank...
F75Z6303AC $593.87 $457.28
Engine - Crankshaft & bearings - Crankshaft
CRANKSHAFT, F150, 5.4L - 4.6L, 5.4L 2004

Maybe they have not jacked their prices up yet. Think I should stock up on at least a block?
