Lightning as a tow vehicle?

Lightning Tow Truck
I have a 01 Ltng, I tow a 27 Track T street rod all over the place. The rear is lowered with shackles 2 inches and JL Traction Bars. I bought a set of "Slam Air" air bags from Summit, had to cut one of the bed floor braces just above the springs for clearance, easy job did it with a Dremmel. Took a couple of hours. When I hook up the trailer, I use a tire ipump that plugs into the cig lighter to pump them up. Usually takes about 40 PSI to level the truck. I towed the car from Richmond VA to York Penn and got 14-15 MPG. Car and trailer together weigh around 4000 pounds. Came back via the Shenadoah mountains, never knew the trailer was behind me. Made another trip to Charolette NC got about same milage. Leaving Thurs morning for Myrtle Beach, SC towing the Track T. Bottom line, it is a great tow vehicle.

I towed my 2800lb (Approx. ) Samurai rock crawler, on an 18' trailer from Phoenix to Moab, UT and back last year, and it was wonderful!
My truck was lowered 1" in ft. and 2" in back, and had air bags in the rear. (I would recommend them if you will be doing it regularly)
There are a few good hills on the way, and I had to take it out of O/D a couple of times, but other than that I averaged around 70MPH the whole way.
I actually would have kept it for towing duty, if I didn't have to drive down gravel roads and stuff.
BTW, I averaged about 12MPG towing...
I honetly think the only reason Ford rates the towing to 5000#'s is because the rear suspension is a little soft, other than that the engine/ trans. handles it without a problem...
Oh, one thing I would recommend too, is if you are going to tow more than once a year... Get a trailer with brakes, and a controller, it will make a huge difference, and save your brakes in the long run!!
