Ported Blower Versus Pulley?

Based on my reading here and other sites the claims are a gain of about 30-40 hp from a ported blower and about 3 lbs more boost. These seem about the same as a 4 lb pulley. Can you expect to see these gains from a ported blower with a stock pulley? Do you need to have a chip/reflash with just a ported blower? Is the ported blower a safer way to go than a pulley? Thanks in advance for the answers.

The extra boost will definitely take advantage of the ported blower, moreso than stock boost. I'd think with stock boost, the porting will help some. With around 12-14psi you will get a great gain and be fine with a conservative tune.

You may get more boost with the 4# pulley, but you certainly will not get the same horsepower numbers. When I jumped from my 2# to my 4# pulley on my stock blower, I gained 2-4 HP at the wheels, max. The ported blower is more efficient than the stock Eaton, and it will create more boost with less pulley. With my 4# and stock Eaton I was hitting 12# of boost. With my 2# and ported Eaton I'm hitting at least that (haven't really gotten on it yet), and it still feels stronger all the way through the power band. I still have yet to dyno to determine what it is really doing, but the bottom line is just adding pullies on the stock blower will not give you the same results, because, after all, it is the stock Eaton.

You may not see 30-40 RWHP gains on the stock pully, but I would think you would see gains regardless. I am no tuner, but my guess is you would see an improvement in boost and efficiency, but I don't believe you'll see 30-40 RWHP. Remember, mods tend to compliment eachother as you go.

Your other two questions I can't really answer. I don't know yet if I need a reburn (dyno on Saturday to verify a/f ratios), and safeness of one over the other depends on perspective. I never blew my motor on the 2# of 4# pulley, and I hope not to blow it with the ported Eaton. Like the others say around here: if you're worried about breaking it, don't mod it.

tlis,

Thanks for the info. I am seriously considering having the blower ported either in conjuction with or instead of adding a 4 lb pulley. I am concerned about what I should do about the tuning if I go without adding the pulley. I would of course get a tune if I go with adding a pulley. I was hoping one of the tuners would chime in. I guess I can give them a call.

It's not the HP, it's the torque. You probably got about 10hp with the pulley change, but over 40lbs of torque. That's what get's these trucks down the road/track. I would tend to believe 4psi of extra boost will give you more gain than a ported blower. A combination of the two would be optimal.

Absolutely. I think the addition of the ported blower and the pulley would optimize the combo and you would get a higher multiple of HP and torque because of it.

The addition of the 4# did pop the torque up quite a bit, but the set of the pants feel is not nearly what it is with the ported blower. Once I get my headers and high flow cats I'll put the 4# back on and see what it does with the ported blower.
