Start of a New Project (Glassing Cluster)
Start of a New Project (Glassing Cluster)
I have a G-Tech Gauge and EGT gauge I need to mount but want it to be clean. I have finally decided to build a custom gauge cluster that will be built ontop of that long oval plastic piece in the dash on the passenger side. I am currently learning how to glass so the piece will look professional.... do you guys think it will look cool and what color should it be?
I'm leaning more towards the grey plastic color, just in a gloss.

I was thinking of doing the same thhing but havent found the time to start it yet. I was going to paint it the same color as my truck since my sub boxes are sonic blue too. If you have any other painted parts inside i would make everything match.

The funny thing is I got one of those vaccum machines from my mom for Christmas. I have spent drunk nights vaccum sealing all sorts of weird chit...
Meatbag, your box got me interested in learning how to glass... great job on the box! Now I just need to glass my entire amprack/subbox so it looks like one continous piece.
Kitties Rule!

Nope that's vacuum sealing, you can make your wet fiberglass layup and stuff it in the bag and vac it down it will make a nice part that will reduce sanding.
Vacuum forming goes like this.
Make a wood master of the shape you want, sand it very smooth.
2. Make a wood frame about 3-4" larger than your master.
3. Staple or screw a sheet of Hi Impact Styrene plastic to the frame.
4. Find a heavy duty cardboard box bigger than your master and tape a piece of peg board to the open end.
5. Cut a hole in the box for your shop vac hose and plug the hose in.
6. Heat the plastic over the stove, try to heat it evenly until it sags in the frame, turn on the vacuum and ram the hot plastic over the master an there you go.
It's actually eaiser to do than explain.
Or I can do it if enough people would want one.

Isnt that oval that you're replacing the air bag cover? I guess it might be fun to see what kind of impression a set of gauges makes in the forehead of you passenger if you ever have a deployment.
