Open filter element or boxed?
Open filter element or boxed?
Do the open filter elements like the S&B or K&N perform as well as the boxed kits that are available from our tuners? I know the boxed kits keep out some engine heat when not moving, but is there really much of a gain in performance?
Thanks!
Thanks!
Allot of the L owners I've seen run the open element 12" filter. I think Vinnies truck is a perfect example. It's been featured in the mags, runs 10's in the 1/4 mile, and he's running open element. That's good enough for me. JMO
I compared mine ...moving to sitting...it would come up several degrees sitting still..but would always rapidly return to within a couple degrees rolling....this is around 55 degrees ambient....open element
With a heat soaked engine going down the 1/4 mile in 100° heat you will get a better time with the stock air box and a couple of 2" holes cut in the bottom than a 9,10,12,14" open cone filter if you are running around 13psi or less. Now, I trap 97 mph in the eighth mile with over 20psi. Do I use the stock air box? No. Why not? Because the stock air box and filter cannot support that kind of airflow.
Most all of the 10 second trucks are cooled with ice and fans between runs. They are mostly pushed to the starting lanes to prevent heat soak.
Unless you have a tube which takes ambient air directly to the filter the cool air from outside it will take more than a quarter miles to reach outside air temps in the engine compartment. With an open filter on the freeway the air temps will rise when going into boost. At 55° the engine compartment area cools much quicker than when the outside temps are 100°.
The stock filter is the best choice if you run less than a 9" lower pulley IMO.

Thanks easterisland. As you know it does get hot here in GA! I think I am going to rig up a fresh air duct and connect it to the bottom of my factory airbox, where I have already cut a hole.
