The Fridge

Hey fellas,

I'm sure all you gurus of MM&FF read the cause of the Fridge to go lean and blowning their engine up. They pin pointed the cause to a bad "fuel relay" was it? Is this a concern for us or just a rare thing that happened to the Fridge?

if the fuel pump relay was bad the truck would cut off completely...

a relay is just a relay, an ON/OFF switch so to speak.

if the relay went bad the truck would simply stop running.

just my .02

take it with however many grains of salt you wish.

I don't know what happened, but I was in NJ when it happened.

Evan called Jim and said something was wrong with the truck. Jim told him not to drive it and get it over to his shop. Instead of Listening to Jim, he took it to the track and blew it up.

So to me if you have something wrong with your truck, and ignore good advice to get it checked out, it is driver error.

I believe it's in the January issue that explains what exactly happened. Something caused the Fridge to go lean and ultimately throw a rod. Just wondering if we all should look into this.

There is actually a hi-lo fuel pump relay located next to the fuse box on the driver's side under the hood. This relay causes the fuel pressure to be increased at wide open throttle...taking fuel pressure from 33-35 pounds to 52 pounds.

Your truck will run normally without this relay or if the relay has gone bad but it will be extremely lean if you get in it.

So should we all just replace the relays just to be safe, how can we tell if it's no longer doing it's job, besides the obvious?

Somebody posted about a year ago that the relay was bad on their L. The person was getting a custom dyno tune and the tuner couldn't get rid of the detonation by tuning. He started troubleshooting and found the relay was not working. They replaced the relay and finished the tune.

I would say if your truck starts detonating for no reason at WOT get out of it and check the relay.

Maybe you can answer a question for me....

I want to put an Autometer Ultra-Lite electric fuel pressure guage (#105-463) in my truck (2000 F-150 5.4 Non-Lightning). Would the sended connect to the Schrader valve on the passenger-side fuel rail? What hose Part # would I need to attached the sender to the fuel rail? And how would you run the wires?

D'Amore has become an authority on tuning Lightning engine, and what he saw on the Dynoje scared him nearly to death. What could it be you ask? He saw an incredibly lean air/fuel ratio in the 14.7:1 range, and that really got his attention. A check of the chip revealed that all was well in computerland. The engine should have been getting the proper fuel, but it wasn't. Eventually he diagnosed the problem as a faulty fuel pump relay that prevented the fuel pump from supplying full flow. He was also confident the bad relay caused the engine to blow in the first place. Good thing he caught it or we would have popped another mill right there on the dyno.
