Denso Plug goes bad at the Dyno
Denso Plug goes bad at the Dyno
I took my truck to the Dyno and before I had finished the 2nd pull it was misfiring at idle. I just installed some IT22's on Sunday. What’s the warranty on Denso Plugs? The porcelain broke about quarter inch from the end of the electrode.
A friend works for Ford and we put the test meter on it and plug #8 was the problem
First pull was 426.8 RWHP and 528.4 RWTQ and the AF was between 11.3 to 11.5
I installed an old plug in the hole 8 and it back up running again.
Anyway, what's the warranty on Denso plugs and who do I contact?

CD,
It sounds like you lucked out and had no valve damage. That's a good thing.

In December of 2003 my 03 had the Motorcraft also. Maybe they changed it in 04......anyone want to sound off that has an 04.
Rocks
Id have to disagree about them NOT being forgiven, I think Denso IT-22's are thee most forgiven plug on the market
Now as for delicate, THATS A DIFFERANT STORY.
I've had them in for well over a year, 2 racing seasons, and
8 very differant set ups I run.
They work flawless for me and my set up's.

Rob,
I think what BigFan was talking about with the forgiving part is when Denso's are destroyed. They almost always crack the porcelain off.
On the other hand you have one of the few sets of NGK's that cracked the porcelain when destroying themselves.
When it's all good there is nothing to worry about with either plug.

Just my opinion but this is why Denso's suck, they just arent as forgiving as regular plugs.

They shouldn't have to be forgiving. Denso manufactures them to be installed in vehicles that are properly dialed in.
Don't flame me......just my $0.02

Jim and Rob, I respect your opinons. Lemme try and explain a little better what Im speaking about. Conditions are always changing on our vehicles as well as many different other factors. Lets say you get a bad tank of gas, Lets say your tuner doesnt get your tune dialed in 100%, lets say the air quality is way different than what your chip is dialed in for, thats when your gonna have problems with the densos. This is what I mean by less forgiving and these things are constantly changing and thats why threads like this come along every few months. Jim, I agree with you 100% that having the vehicle dialed in has alot to do with it but Ive seen the IT-18s crack on a 100% stock truck
Again, No flames I just think you guys didnt understand what I meant in my post.

However, (and I have a set of IT-22's in right now) in Denso's own site (FAQ page) they talk about plugs come gapped, you won't have to gap, you could damage them if you try to gap....and their chart says IT-22's should be gapped at .044".
Then why did mine come gapped at .030" checked under an optical comparator???
This is taken from their website....
Q. Do I need to set the gap?
A. Generally, no. The DENSO Iridium Power plug comes pre-set with a protective sleeve over the firing end, to protect the gap from accidental alteration. DENSO Iridium Power’s ultra-efficient firing power compensates for normally recommended gap settings that are smaller than the pre-set value. In the cases of vehicle modifications (nitrous, turbo-chargers, super-chargers, high power ignition systems, etc.), some adjustments may be desired. Or, if you prefer to remain consistent with factory specifications, you may adjust. However, please be careful not to place any stress on the fine center electrode during adjustment. You could accidentally break off the very hard, and therefore brittle, tip.
Taken from Spark Plug Specifications chart:
IT22 plug # 5327 stock# 14mm thread dia. . 708" thread reach 16mm hex 1.1mm gap 0.044” gap
Moral: Nothing's perfect.

Buddy,
The stock plugs in my Lightning and my buddy's 03 Cobra are iridium and are made by Denso. I even spoke to Denso at the Sema show and they confirmed that they make them for Ford. They are the Denso Long life and are good for 100K. The denso's you buy from Joe Tuner are a different version (a little more performance focused) but are only good for 50K max. The stock heat range is equivalent to IT16.
And Ford certainly doesn't pay $80 bucks for them.
