Into the gas tank it went...
Once again observing that oh so resentful light flicker take place in the dash cluster, I cursed under my breath. "Low Fuel" is my worst adversary on the road mainly since one notices it so often. Swiftly decelerating from the accustomed 80mph pace to weave into an off ramp in search for a Gas Station. Two competitors stood side by side as I pulled into the Mobil, thus Shell losing one customer that day.
I was to add some fuel additive into the old fuel ***** before filling her up with some revoltingly overpriced fuel, second tank in two days. Removed the cap from the additive and quickly began to deposit it in but right before putting the bottle in this hole of emptiness I noticed there was another "top" on the bottle that was of a plastic consistency.
Before I could stop myself from inserting this fluid it was too late. Some of the additive went in including that plastic top. The incident was in slow motion but the movement of my hand and arm inserting the bottle was unstoppable. Soon as it was plunged in it was pulled out with an explosion of curse words my grandfather would be proud of. The fellow in the next pump quickly glanced over and said, "Nice....", imbecile.
Shaking my head realizing there was nothing that could be done I finished adding the additive and filled her up. Purchased a pack of smokes, water and continued on my way to the city.
Should I worry or is a “do not worry about it” situation?

Re: Into the gas tank it went...
My understanding is that most filler necks for the gas tanks have a mesh type filter about half way down the neck that goes to the gas tank.. Like a screen. This prevents things like large debris getting in and people siphoning your gas etc. I am not sure if the Lightning has this or not but I would guess it does. If you want to check you can take a thin hose and stick it in and see how far you can put the hose in. "If" it has it then I wouldn’t worry about it other then it may take longer for you to fill up your tank now
this poetry night?
Normal version: I tossed a plastic thing into the gas tank, gonna do any harm?
Probably not, gas dissolves just about anything thats peterolium based. Not much you can really do either way right?

Not to worry.
My fuel hose clamp came loose and I had to pull the whole fuel pump assembly out to replace the 6 crimp clamps with the screw type.
There is a how should I say, this a large filter bag that covers the fuel pump inlet. It is rather large and that little foil cap you lost won't phase it.
Your safe as can be. I wouldn't give it another thought. Just don't make a habbit of it.
There are roll over check valves in the fuel tank entry and the vent and return lines. If you start sticking stuff down there you will screw them up.

KINDA OFF TOPIC,
I'm paranoid when I change the oil in my cars, that little plastic ring that stays on the oil container when you remove the cap. I always grab a pair of pliers and pull it off.
OK back on topic

That's why I always use a funnel with a neck small enough to catch those plastic rings. Instead of dumping the oil straight down the filler tube.

Every time i change my oil and unscrew the cap the lil ring comes off with the cap
. Guess im lucky
Off topic again sorry
The cap did not go into your gas tank. If you get underneath and look up at your gas tank, you will see a filler neck coming from the fender and go to the gas tank. It has some rubber hoses connecting it to the fender fitting and the gas tank. At the end where it connects to the tank, there is a plastic “egg crate” insert with about ¼ inch square holes. This insert will prevent the cap from falling into the gas tank. If this bothers you, you can remove the filler line from the tank and fender fitting and remove the plastic insert with the cap. I bet this insert was put into the filler line to prevent siphoning of gas by undesirables.
