Question Is it possible to remove HEADS without removing Block?

I think I have a blown head gasket because of to many 22lb Boostings!
Is it possible and or easy to remove the heads saftly to replace the Gaskets?

Cool

HI!... If you have ARP head studs then you will most likely have to pull the engine. I have heard of some guys doing it with the head studs but it's a pain. If you still have the factory TTY bolts (torque to yield) then it's easy. You will have to pull the front timing chain cover and all the accesseries. It's time consuming. Not as easy as changing head gaskets on a push rod SBF.

Thanks Neal

I am running a stock block so I guess it would have factory bolts.

Frank, I thought you were building a new motor this winter? Sounds like a good time to pull it and make it stronger.

If you have the ARP head studs you can pull the drivers side head. You have to remove the studs and the two back studs you have to lift the head off at the same time as the studs to remove them. I had to pull the drivers side head this summer and that is how I did that. As far as the passenger side I don't think you can pull the head with the engine in.

I have pulled my heads twice. With stock bolts and with studs without removing the block. Taking those studs out were a pain! When setting the timing back its good to mark your spots on your pulleys and chains with white so there easy to see. Good luck and expect to be there awhile.

Thanks for the repy's fellas!

Local builder has everything up in the Air know?
I don't know what to do now?
1. If I pull the heads and nothing else is damaged replace valve and gaskets then run truck and a couple of months later the whole thing goes?

2. pull heads and theres cylinder wall damage and or rings gone bad. then pulling the heads was a waist of time!

3. don't really wanna build a new Stonger motor since the current Stocker is doing so good. And since the Valves are bending instead of the Rods Breaking?

We wanted to make this motor to be in the 10's witch could've been done with better traction since I ve been hitting 11.6-7's
@ 119mph and with 1.78 60ft's

So I'm stuck on what to do?

I bent a valve in my motor. Since theres so much involved in pulling the heads, I went ahead and built the motor. After the heads are off theres nothing left to pull the motor. If your that far into it build the motor. Its better than going through that twice. I have been through it a few times and I hope its along time before I go through it agian.

I was faster for me to pull the drivers side head than it was to pull the whole engine. Its up to you and your mechanic. If I was pulling the engine out I would put in stronger parts while I had it out to save you the trouble of having to pull the engine again.
