I'm the certified SVT sales consultant for my local Ford dealership. My first experience in a Lightning was when I took fellow message boarder (Speeder) out for his test drive. I was instantly in love. I just bought my '03 Lightning this year and I LOVE it It's got a great ride, handles like a race car, ohhh yeah and it halls a@@ too. You can modify the bagebers out of them, and get lots of input from the great people on this forum. If you want to buy one, you can contact me any time. THAT GOES FOR ANYONE ELSE OUT THERE It's not often when a passion, hobby, and carrer can be one in the same. I thank the people at SVT for making my life so much fun.
Wished you lived back here in New Hampshire, I could use a connection...

Have you checked on insurance rates yet? Some places still think they are JUST another truck.
Payload is only 800 lbs but I've heard of lot's of guy's that overload the heck out of em without too much issue.

I've had more muscle cars than I can remember, but I like the L the most. Very unique vehicle, very fast, and can be made very, very fast with just a couple of mods. I wouldn't buy anything older than an 03 because of the plug problems (heads modified in the 03s). Other than that, a great truck.

how practical are they for everyday driving?
what kind of gas mileage can you expect out of a stock one?
and did someone say insurance is actually cheap on lightnings? that sounds like a plus.

the '03's have better heads? you can't just take a 01 or 02 and put different heads on it?

i was looking at an 01 or 02 because they seem to be pretty cheap, i'm looking to spend 20k at the most, and dont want anything over 30,000 miles on it.
i would love tog et a 03 but like i said, 20k is the limit pretty much

I say if you can find a 01 thats the year to buy, the ECU is the easiest to program if you want to chip it. As for the heads yes the 03 have more threads, but they sell inserts that will take care of that problem. It is about a 4 hour job and then they are better than the 03 heads.

I love my Lightning and don't think I will ever get rid of it.

I currently have an 03 Lightning and a 1990 5.0 GT. After having 2 1990 GT's, one 11 second LX 5.0, one 93 Lightning and a 2000 GT, I must say that the 03 Lightning is the absolute most loved vehicle I've ever owned. A sure keeper. Fast as hell, durable and gets looks everywhere. The most difficult part of owning it so far has been resisting the urge to modify it. Of all my cars, I wanna try to keep this one stock. You WILL NOT be disappointed.

If you want it to be reliable, keep it stock. Otherwise, mod away and kiss your warranty goodbye. Mine is and always will be stock down to the air filter and I love driving it everytime.

If you wanna make big power, you gotta burn some gas.

Pros:

Great looks
Great power
Handles like a sports car
Good brakes
Super comfy seat
Simple mods make it really fast
Take it to the track on Satarday,Haul lumber on Sunday.

Cons:

Weak connecting rods {they have a nasty habit of going through the block}

99-02 heads only have 3 threads to hold the sparkplugs in {plugs have a nasty habit of poping out}

Your front end will pop and ford wont fix it.

The seat frame will probley rub a hole in the upolustry

The foglights will crack

Your door may crack

Dash lights tend to stop working

Turn signals and/or brake lights will get condensation inside them

The factory radio is a joke

Ford WILL void your warranty for any mod,no matter how minor.

All in all,I love driving this truck. It suits all my needs but Im sick of worring about the motor blowing up.

Andy

Some more pics of the Lightning
You can come on here and read all the bad things about the truck. Like how the rods can be weak, the plugs don't have enough threads, or it isnt the best on gas. But there are things I've came across in the 2 years of owning the truck that make me so glad I own the Lightning over any other car.
I get compliments on the truck just about everywhere I take it. It looks and sounds amazing. It is perfect for me, I use the bed to haul stuff. I enjoy modding it. I ran 12.6 with just $400 into the motor. I've been through many sets of tires and tanks of gas, but I wouldn't keep raplacing the tires, paying the insurance and paying for the gas if I didn't enjoy driving the truck as much as I do. All I can say is go for a ride in one, try to test drive one, and then if you like it as much as some of us on here do, get it. Good luck with it, Shane
