how nice are the L's, i am thinking of getting one
well i currently drive a 92 stealth twin turbo, lots of stuff on it, but i'm just getting tired of it, i've had it for 3 years, i figure i can get 8k for it, and that's being extremely reasonable. I really like the lightnings, but can you all give me a owners point of view with it?
are they reliable? just the regular Q's please thanks |
yo
Im a realtivley new Lightning owner myself, got it in mid October. I have owned two other F150's though. I love my L. Ive heard about problems with the 99-00 models with their intercoolers, and L's do have a reputation for blowing plugs, but it still is an AWESOME vehicle. I really like the ability to haul some a$$ on the track and then go to home depot and throw some quickrete and 2x4's in the back if you need to. One of the perks of owning an L is being on the message board. You'll find tons of info and everyone is eager to help ya if you have any mechancal problems. I found about 5 other L owners in my area through and we all hang out now and then, which is really cool. Im sure some other, more mechanically inclined to the L will chime in about some other things that I missed, but trust me, youll love your truck, and wonder how you did without it.

You will most defenitly love the Lightning. I have owned 3 Vette's (87, 93, 96), 2 '87 Grand National's, '69 SS 396 Camaro, 70 SS Chevelle, and a '98 Cobra. I'm the certified SVT sales consultant for my local Ford dealership. My first experience in a Lightning was when I took fellow message boarder (Speeder) out for his test drive. I was instantly in love. I just bought my '03 Lightning this year and I LOVE it  It's got a great ride, handles like a race car, ohhh yeah and it halls a@@ too. You can modify the bagebers out of them, and get lots of input from the great people on this forum. If you want to buy one, you can contact me any time. THAT GOES FOR ANYONE ELSE OUT THERE It's not often when a passion, hobby, and carrer can be one in the same. I thank the people at SVT for making my life so much fun.

It's nothing uncommon to see a fast car. But, when people see a fast truck, opinions begin to change.
Other than that, lots of people have issues w/ spark plug threads (pre 03) and weak rods. Just go buy one. |
I'm on the verge of selling my '97 M3 to get an L... still not 100% sure on the L yet though. I love the idea of the insane power levels and utility, but not sure if I'd like to drive it in the snow.
One question I had was why do so many people here seem to have gone through 2 L's? I've seen a couple sigs that showed that people have owned a '99 and then a later L. Did the older ones fall apart or something? |
my brother had an RT, when I took him for a ride in the truck after I first got it he was Very impressed with the truck and said he thought it would take that stealth easy if I got a good launch. Aside from your car being all wheel drive thats about the only advantage it has on the L matched up head to head. But if you get one, traction is definately an issue with these trucks when racing.....but when it hooks HOLD ON!
|
If you can afford a later model Lightning it would be best to skip the 99/00 years. My '00 is falling apart compared to newer models, and it has been extremely well taken care of, garage kept, and not a daily driver (40k miles). Lucky for me Ford voided the warranty the week after I bought it, for a flowmaster muffler that THEY installed (Mike Davidson Ford). These trucks are great, but do a search and you'll find a long list of common problems. I hope the first production run of gen3's hold up better.

Aside from ejecting sparkplugs and IC recalls, there aren't too many major problems common to all model years, are there?
Are you saying that the 01+ trucks would be in better shape because they're newer? So they'd just end up falling apart in a few years as well? Or are there some other problems that they solved in the later MY's? |

The brotherhood of people who own L's is the closet thing I've experienced since the days I rode an HD. |
61,000 trouble-free on my 2001 L! Get one and see if you can quit grinnin':D

Stealth,
I just got a 2004 Lightning. I recommend getting one. My 2000 F-150 5.4 was a joke compared to this truck. The 2004 Lightning is the most refined F-150 or Lightning ever built. The future model will only go up in price and need a complete evolution the resolve it's problems just like this one did. |
