Can I get some more info on the ported Eaton?

I've read both the threads on the ported Eaton vs. the Apten. I am interested in getting my blower ported by REM for $300. I just would like to know what all goes into it. Once I pull the blower off, and send it to rem, do they remove the rotors and just port the casing by hand? They port both the inlet and the outlet? I've read over and over a 30hp increase...
That's great and all, but it's not free horsepower is it? It's not guaranteed my block will handle it right? What's the difference with me porting the Eaton, and getting a 50 shot, or me putting on an 8# lower. I may see 30hp at the wheels if not more. But its not free horse is it? I am running a 4# lower and a 2.8 upper. On a cool day I've made 16 pounds of boost. On average I make between 14.5 and 15#'s. I thought that was about the limit of the blower and the block... I don’t think its the best I go in there and port the Eaton, and run the boost up. (After I've already got a 4# lower and a 2.80 upper)
Is there anyway I can put the stock upper back on, port the Eaton and make more power?
Can I get some info on what the best combo is to run on the stock block? Have any temperature test been done on the Ported blower? Does it bring temps down any? Also is it true if I say running a ported Eaton and only a 4# lower is better than a 6# lower on a stock Eaton? What exactly is going on when you port an Eaton? Are the wholes filled with every port job? Is the life of the blower increased or decreased in any way?
Thanks for the help, Shane

HOLY SCHNIKES! That's alot of boost. I am going to try to stay around 14-15 psi MAX on the stock block (ie like running a 6# lower). Gains of around 1.5 - 2.0 psi from the Apten port have been mentioned. That with a 4# lower will give me my 14-15#. Hopefully that type of 14-15# will be a little more friendly temp wise on the motor if the blower is actually more efficient when ported. My goal is to stay safe, completely stock looking and still run low 12's - high 11's on slicks. I think I will hit that goal this spring

Can I request a picture of what the bottom of the blower looks like from REM after the port job?

Above is a picture of the stock eaton.
I just got off the phone with Paul. He is a great guy he knows his stuff. He ports the blower like Apten does. He said they port the inlet, they open the exit area, cut the tabs in front of the V, they stuff the 4 wholes with ab apoxy. He said I can send just the blower case and it will only weigh 14 pounds vs. 40 with rotors.
Was the 30 horse they dynoed on a lightly moded truck like mine, or stock. He said the inlet temps should drop because it frees up movement... Looks like a good deal for $300.

I beat ya to it. I just got off the phone with Jeff. Just kidding. I also just got off the phone with Paul from R.E.M. I think I am going to send them my blower and have them port it for $300.

Does anyone know what kind of truck the 30 horse power increase was on? This really doesnt concern me, but any gains the porting does on a stock truck?
thanks, Shane

Shane,

Let us know how it turns out...I am thinking about doing the same thing after X-Mas. Do you have any dyno runs you'll be able to compare it to? Happy Holidays!

a short answer to your question is no. I have nothing solid to compare it to if I get it next month. Everytime Ive been on the dyno I think I have come up short of my expications. The last time I was on the dyno with the current mods I was at 412/491. But some weird things here going on in the graph. I am not sure if Ill be able to get a reburn on the chip and redyno, and then put the Ported Eaton on and dyno again. I may just do it all in 1 shot, get the chip and swap out the Eaton on the same day then dyno. I will keep you posted.
1 question I had. Was porting this inlet and outlet and the blower case. How does that increase boost? You'd think that you'd lose pressure. I know i'm way off when im thinking here but you are moving more air through there so that will be nice a ported blower but in reality isnt that just giving the boost more room to sit? I pry didnt word that right, I just mean when porting something, I dont know how you can make more pressure? (all boost is is pressure right?) What exactly is going on when you port the eaton?
thanks, Shane

I dont think you actually gain any boost, you just get what you should. If you use a 6# lower on a stock Eaton do you think you get those full 6#s? You might loose some boost because of the Eatons poor airflow and the heat it makes. I think that with the ported Eaton you get better airflow and more efficiency so you will see those full 6#s. Just my point of view.

man i would like to get my eaton ported as well...but a few questions

(1)Will Ford deny warranty if i got it ported? I would think so....but they'd have to pull the blower off to find out so.....maybe not?

(2)Does this add any extra wear/tear to the blower or the engine? Any complications down the road? This is my daily driver, and I want to get more hp out of her, but not at the sacrifice of losing its everyday driveability

(3)To port your blower, you got to send it to them. That means my truck would be inoperable for several days, right? Kinda be hard to pull that off if its my daily driver. Is there like some overnight or over the weekend type deal? Anyone else been in this boat before?

(4)Would you guys reccomend going Kenne Bell or porting the stock eaton? Would going KB mean losing my warranty also?

Thanks!
